Airbnb Wants To Pay You To Live In Italy For Three Months

If you have been thinking of giving the expat life a try, without a long-term commitment, this might be the perfect opportunity for you.

Airbnb recently partnered with a small non-profit called “Wonder Grottole” to help revitalize a small village in Italy named Grottole. The opportunity will allow four people to live in the small town for three months rent-free, while also earning $1,000 per month. If you’re wondering what’s the catch, there isn’t one.

The small village has been abandoned by its younger generations who are now seeking more fast-past city life and higher paying career opportunities. This has left the town with many uninhabited homes, many of which are turning into temporary vacation homes.

Airbnb recently stepped in to help the village try to get back on its feet.

“The San Francisco company originally partnered with the Italian city of Civita in 2016, and now is partnering with Grottole (via nonprofit Wonder Grottole) to help revitalize the city. “We will find every way possible to support sustainable tourism, and give visibility to these rural areas,” says Federica Calcaterra, PR Manager at Airbnb Italy.

The town currently only has a population of 300, with 600 homes unused. The mayor is looking for ways to preserve the historical place as well as bringing in residents who can bring fresh new ideas. “When we met it was really a perfect match,” says Calcaterra. “They were looking, not for tourists, but people to enjoy and be part of the community.”

Airbnb will provide funding for the village to convert three old buildings into a community center. Airbnb will also fund the “Italian sabbatical” for four lucky winners who are chosen. The winners must agree to host Airbnb experiences and generate lots of press during their three-month stay.

If this sounds like your perfect escape, you have until February 17 to apply.
