You Can Fly Business Class For Less With Emirates

The Dubai-based airline, Emirates has introduced a new approach to flying business.

Their new offering is for the traveler who wants the comfortable seating business class offers sans the extra perks.

Emirates launched their “Special” business class fares on June 10th, as reported on the aviation blog, One Mile at a Time.

Like all Emirates flight options, this ticket type includes a free checked bag and two carryons but it does not allow first-class upgrades.

Unlike the other four business class options, the “basic” business class will not offer lounge access or a chauffeur to and from the airport.

There will be restricted seat assignments, meaning those flying the “Special” fare class will only be able to select their seat after check-in opens.

Emirates is the first major airline to offer a “basic” business class option.

For now, the “Special” fares are only available on select routes.

A flight from Dubai to Muscat on the “Special” business-class fare ends up being around $100 cheaper than the “Saver” business class option which does include lounge access and a chauffeur.

A spokesperson from Emirates tells the business magazine, Fast Company, new fares will “be offered on certain routes based on seasonal trends in travel demand.”

In 2016, the Emirates CEO Tim Clark tells Skift in an interview, “you might just say, OK, I’ll give you a special price, just for the [business-class] bed. I won’t give you the incentives. I won’t give you ground. You’ll get the business product in the air only, and that’s it. No chauffeur drive, no business-class lounge, no expedited [security] search, no uplifting your baggage allowance, et cetera. You just pay for the bed. I’ll give you a price for that.”

Advocates for this new option say it’s a way for fliers to pay for what they want while some aviation insiders think it will annoy fliers that are use to the perks of business class.

Currently, Emirates is the only airline to offer this “basic” business class option.
