Zanzibar, Tanzania is a world unto itself with gorgeous beaches, secluded paradises, architectural destinations, and excellent cuisine. Whenever you visit Zanzibar, Tanzania, there will be many things to do. We’ve grouped the activities that will help you get the most out of Zanzibar, Tanzania and experience the full range of culture, history, and cuisine.

Go Snorkeling at Mnemba Atoll

You can go snorkeling at many locations across the world, but Zanzibar is an excellent choice for snorkeling with marvelous tour guides. Beginning with a scenic trip across the crystalline waters in a traditional Dhow sailing boat, you can relax and enjoy the breeze. There will be countless visions of beauty on the way, from leaping dolphins to colorful reefs. After a few hours of snorkeling, your tour concludes with a local dinner of fresh barracuda or kingfish and cocktails.

Visit the turtles and museums of Prison Island

While Prison Island, which is also known as Changuu, has many great attractions and is another perfect spot for snorkeling, it has two great and unique features: giant turtles and the Slave Trade Museum. The latter is a treat for the mind with engrossing exhibits to get your history and education fix. The turtles are gentle giants whom—so long as you are respectful and gentle—you will be offered to interact with. These are truly marvelous creatures, some of whom are nearly two centuries old!

Visit the Spice Plantations

The spice tour is a true hidden gem. Not only are you able to learn a substantial amount of history that touches on many different cultures around the world, as Zanzibar is a notable trade stop from the 18th century, but the plantations are gorgeous. In addition to spices such as nutmeg, turmeric, cinnamon, and cardamom, you will be sampling delicious local fruits. Best of all, you can purchase these goods for yourself—you’ll never find fresher spices than this!

Spot colorful Colobus monkeys in Jozani National Park

The only national park in Zanzibar, the Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park is conveniently located in the middle of the island. Home of Red Colobus Monkeys, these fascinating and endangered animals have distinct stripes and pink markings on their nose and lips. These beautiful creatures are far from the only animals you’ll encounter, however, as there are numerous other mammals, duikers, and countless birds and butterflies. You might just be lucky enough to spot the Zanzibar Leopard.

Have fun at the Full Moon party

If you time your visit right, you can visit the North Beaches and enjoy the Full Moon part at Kendwa Rocks. Needless to say, this is held only when there is a full moon and is a big attraction even for the locals. Held as a beachfront party, you will be able to experience local performers, singers, DJs, and other cultural attractions. There are bars, a dance floor, acrobats, fire-eaters, and many other things to see and do. Not to mention, the cocktails and food are delicious, with vendors offering authentic kebabs and wood-fired pizzas.
