Passengers are reporting that U.S. Customs systems are operational after experiencing a sudden outage around 3:30 pm EST today, causing chaos at the nation’s busiest airports. Passengers were forced to check-in manually while Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) investigated possible causes, causing huge lines.

CBP confirmed the incident with a tweet, saying, “CBP is experiencing a temporary outage with its processing systems at various airports of entry & is taking immediate action to address the technology disruption. CBP officers continue to process international travelers using alternative procedures until systems are back online.”

“CBP officers are working to process travelers as quickly as possible while maintaining the highest levels of security,” the agency reassured in a follow-up tweet.

According to CNN, CBP does not suspect a cyber attack to be the cause of the outage. Passengers are still being encouraged to check with their airlines for possible delays as a result of the temporary outage.
