Located in northeast Catalonia, between Barcelona and
Costa Brava is the beautiful city of Girona.
It’s medieval walls, and narrow-cobbled streets, and architecture makes
Girona one of the most charming cities you will visit in Spain.
Here are 5 reasons why you should make the haul to Girona:
Girona is the
Perfect Day Trip from Barcelona

Architecture
From 982 to 1492, Jews lived in an area of Girona called El Call, a maze of narrow, winding, cobblestoned lanes, that are still intact like they were over 500 years ago. Known as the “The Jewish Quarter” it’s one of the best-preserved in the world.
One thing you will notice when you arrive in Girona
are the medieval walls known as Passeig de la Muralla.A walk on the medieval walls is a
must-do activity while in Girona.
Lastly, pay a visit across the Eiffel Bridge. Gustav Eiffel constructed a bridge in Girona just before the Eiffel Tower was built. Also called the Pont de les Peixateries Velles, this bridge spans the Onyar River and is the most famous in Girona.

If you’re looking for some cheap and authentic
food in Barcelona, one place that both locals and travelers recommend is heading
to the La Boqueria or Mercado de La Boqueria.
Located in the Ciudad Vieja district of Barcelona, La Boqueriaone serves as a one-stop-shop for visitors to taste the best of Barcelona.
But there are some places in Barcelona that aren’t
on tourists’ radars that you don’t want to miss.
Located in the heart of Barcelona’s El Raval neighborhood, between the Rambla of Barcelona and the Avenida Parallel, Foni is an amazing Gambian and Senegalese restaurant that’s not only an amazing place to eat but a great place to hang out if you want a low-key evening with good music.
It’s one of few Black-owned restaurants in Barcelona where you can enjoy African juices, such as Bisap, baobab juice or freshly squeezed ginger juice, and traditional African dishes such as Gambian domoda (peanut soup), chep bu Yapp (fried rice with meat or fish), mafe (white rice with peanut sauce), or super kanja (okra soup).

The best part? All of these dishes will cost you less than 7€!
Keep in mind that you will be served a large
portion of food. If you’re not that
hungry or you’re traveling solo, you can ask for half of the portion size.
In addition to the good food and fresh juices, Foni offers cocktails and beer at insanely cheap prices. For example, mojitos and piña coladas can be purchased for 5 €.

The last thing worth mentioning is that the service you will receive from the staff at Foni will make you feel that you’re stepping foot in West Africa. The staff is welcoming and will make you feel right at home.

From banging bread on walls to peeling potatoes, there are many
ways that people around the world herald in the new year with hopes of
prosperity and good health. Here are a few traditions you may want to start implementing
into your new year’s celebrations.
Japan
Just before midnight on New Year’s Eve, it is tradition to eat soba noodles. The long noodle denotes the crossing from one year to the next and signifies a letting go of the past year’s regrets before the fresh start of the new year.

Columbia
On New Year’s Eve, Columbians often place three potatoes
under their bed: one peeled, one unpeeled, and one half-peeled. When the clock
strikes midnight, they reach under their bed and grab one potato. Peeled means
they’ll have financial problems, unpeeled indicates abundance, and half peeled is
somewhere in between.
Spain
If you are looking for a tradition with a challenge, it’s Spanish
tradition to eat 12 grapes within the 12 seconds leading into the new year. If
you can eat them all in time, it is said that you will have 12 months of good
luck.
In the Philippines, the new year is celebrated by serving 12
round fruits. The round produce symbolizes coins—which represent prosperity and
wealth for each month of the upcoming year. Apples, melons, oranges, and grapes
are popular options.
Brazil
Seven is a lucky number in Brazilian culture. Come New Year’s
Eve, seven pomegranate seeds are eaten to keep the purse full and seven grapes
to ensure abundance in all areas of life.

Ireland
This tradition can get a bit noisy. The people of Ireland
are known to bang bread against the walls of their homes on New Year’s Eve. Why?
It’s believed that bad luck and evil spirits are chased away and good luck
invited in.
The new year is celebrated in Greece by eating vasilopita, a sweet yeast bread. According to tasteofhome.com, “Eaten at midnight, the bread is made in honor of Greece’s revered St. Basil. Before serving the family, beginning with the older member, households set a slice of bread aside for the saint and a portion for the poor. A coin is baked into the bread and the person whose slice contains the coin is in for a year filled with good fortune.

If you are looking for travel inspiration, here is an
interesting place to start. Kalon
Surf, a luxury surf school in Costa Rica, relied on psychologists as
well as travel experts to come up with the best destinations for each Myers-Briggs
personality type.
For those who are not familiar, Myers-Briggs
is a personality test that breaks down opposing behaviors into the following
four groups:
These preferences then create one of sixteen personality
types which the surf company then used to determine which destination in the
world would best suit you. You can take the test here.
“Although deciphering personality is more of an art than an
exact science, unraveling your emotional predispositions can help you decide
what travel environments you might thrive in,” says the Kalon Surf website.
Here are their recommendations.

A Puerto Rican style Christmas will be unforgettable.
For starters, average
temperatures range in the mid-70s in December – making it one of the best places
for those of you wanting to enjoy Christmas in the sun.
It’s one of the most exciting and festive times to be on the island as people celebrate Christmas all month long.
From mid-December
until Christmas Eve, churches hold mass at dawn where you can find the music
genre aguinaldos.
Aguinaldo is a genre of Christmas
music that’s found in many Latin American countries, similar to Christmas carols
in the United States.
In Puerto
Rico, Christmas Eve or Nochebuena is more
important than Christmas Day as families serve a traditional Christmas dinner that
includes rice and beans, pork, and tembleque: a custard made with
coconut, cornstarch, vanilla, and cinnamon.
Sunshine Coast,
Australia
The destination name
says it all – Sunshine is everywhere.
Prepare for the
heat as average temperatures in December average the upper-80s.
A favorite among
locals is the Mooloolaba Christmas Boat Parade.

Nassau, Bahamas
The best part about the Bahamas during Christmas (besides the warm temperatures) is the fact that it’s one of the most important traditions in the Bahamian culture.
Christmas in the
Bahamas is just as festive as any other time of the year where you can find Christmas
concerts almost every weekend leading up to Christmas.
But the most
important tradition is the day after Christmas for the annual Christmas Junkanoo Festival.
Blending art, culture, and music, locals join in on the fun by dancing in the streets with the Junkanoo groups during the parade.

Buenos Aires, Argentina
With its location in the Southern Hemisphere, Christmas in Argentina means it’s the beginning
of summer.
Even though it’s beginning to transition out of the rainy season, expect to spend a lot of time outside. Expect fireworks display on Christmas Eve, dancing in the streets, and good food.

The desire to get inked up abroad is the latest trend among travelers, according to a recent report from Hostel World – a global hostel focused online booking platform.
Out of the more than 1,000 Americans surveyed, Hostel World’s
research found that every two in five have attained a tattoo while traveling.
The reason? Because
they are tired of the basic souvenirs.
“For many, globetrotting is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that creates lasting memories. But many people have moved on from fridge magnets and keyrings as travel souvenirs,” Cathy Thomson, global head of customer experience at Hostelworld, said. “In an always-on society where you can easily share live updates on the go, it’s no surprise the next generation are seeking more permanent mementos that they can wear on their skin as a badge of honor. Their personal tattoo can unlock their stories of unique experiences.”
According to the report, 40% of travelers between the ages
of 18 and 35 have admitted that they have commemorated a trip by permanent souvenir
imprinted on their body. More than half of tatted travelers admitted to planning
their design and tattoo artist ahead of time.
So where are the most popular places Americans are getting tatted?
1. Mexico
2. Canada
3. The UK
4. Spain
5. Italy
And it’s not just a trend among Americans. The phenomenon is
global. More than 60% of Australians
and 50% of Brits have expressed keen interest in getting a tattoo next time
they travel.
Inspirational quotes are the most common tattoos seen while traveling, according to the report. Other popular tattoos include a current or former partner’s name; a tattoo adaptation of local culture or religion; and song lyrics.
Hostels around the globe have been quick to respond to this trend by providing on-site options for tattoo infatuated guests, according to Hostel World. The Yellow, a popular hostel in Rome is popular among travelers, and there are hostels in Denmark, Sweden, Cambodia and Nepal that offer tattoo parlors.

Wanna hear a travel horror story? Paying for your Airbnb only to find out it doesn’t exist. This happened to Ian and Denise Feltham, a couple from the UK, after making vacation plans for Ibiza, Spain.
The couple paid about $11,800 for a two-week stay in a luxurious Airbnb listing in a VIP penthouse, including a hot tub, Turkish bath, and marble-decked terrace.
Traveling with their two Yorkshire terriers, the Feltham’s wanted an accommodation that was pet-friendly which led them to their dream Airbnb listing — or so they thought.
Feltham began to feel concerned about the listing days prior to the trip and contacted Airbnb but he says he was passed around from one representative to the next. One of the representatives wrote the Feltham’s to let them know she was going on vacation and instead of offering help, she gave them numbers to call if they “felt the situation was urgent,” recalls Feltham.
Lux Travel Collective posted the listing but had become unresponsive days before their scheduled arrivals. There were also lots of details left out which left the couple worried.
The Feltham’s decided to show up at their already paid for accommodation only to be refused by the building’s reception.
CNN Travel reached out to Ian Feltham through LinkedIn’s messaging system and he recalled having to scramble with his wife to find a pet-friendly accommodation after realizing the listing did not actually exist.
“They are rubbish, faceless organization,” Feltham tells CNN in a LinkedIn message.
The Sunday Times told the story of the scammed couple resulting in the photos of the Airbnb listing being removed. According to CNN Travel, the photos were compiled from condos for rent or sale on the Las Boas complex’s website.
The staff at the Las Boas complex says the Airbnb listing is fake and of the 40 units on the property, this accommodation does not exist.
An owner of a Las Boas unit, Maria Cala says, “there are some nice penthouses in the building with direct access by lift” but there are no private lifts like the listing said.
Airbnb is currently handling the situation and has released a statement: “Our handling of this issue fell below our usual high standards and we have reached out to the guest to apologize and refund them in full. We have suspended the listing while we investigate and are continuing to work with the guest to make things right.”
Currently, a United States passport is not the most powerful
passport in the world, and having a second one could open up more travel
options. From fewer visa applications to shorter customs lines, it may be worth
looking into your current options.
If you have a grandparent, or even a great-grandparent, who
is from another country, you may be able to obtain a passport from their birth
country as well. Here are four countries
in which you may be able to use grandma’s name to claim a second passport.
If you can prove that one of your grandparents was born in the United Kingdom, then you can set out on the three-step processes of obtaining a second passport. First, you have to apply for a UK Ancestry Visa, then after five years you can apply for permanent settlement, and one year after that, you can apply for citizenship.
Heidi Sandstrom | Unsplash
Ireland
According to the Irish
Foreign Ministry, if one of your grandparents was born on the island of
Ireland, or one of your parents was an Irish citizen at the time of your birth,
even though they were not born on the island of Ireland, you can apply for
Irish Citizenship.
Italy
In Italy, there is no limit to how far back you reach to obtain citizenship. No matter how many generations back, as long as your ancestors maintained their citizenship until they had children, you could be eligible. All you need are birth or marriage certificates to prove it.
According to the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of Spain, after living in Spain
legally for one year, you can apply for Spanish citizenship if one of your
grandparents was originally from the country.
Lithuania, Germany, and Hungary have similar laws to the four
countries previously mentioned, mostly having to do with lost citizenship due
to war, deportation or political imprisonment. If you believe you have ancestors from these
regions, it’s certainly worth looking into your options.
State
officials are taking action by an aggressive goal of generating 100% of its energy
from renewable sources by 2045.
South Beach,
Miami
The impacts of climate change have been so severe in Miami that the city’s mayor dubbed it the “canary in the mineshaft” when it comes to the impacts of rising sea levels.
Officials are taking action to keep the most vulnerable areas dry by building sea walls, installing pumps and raising roads, but recent hurricanes combined with rising seas have eroded parts of South Beach, as reported in The Miami Herald.
Copacabana welcomes millions of people each year to its sandy shores, but the iconic beach is vulnerable to the impacts of sea-level rise.
Recent storm
surges have eroded stretches of the city’s beaches and sent sand onto
surrounding streets, the
Guardian reported.
Surfers
Paradise, Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia
Like many other urban beaches, Surfers Paradise is fighting erosion. As the sea levels rise, replacing lost sand will grow more costly for Australian officials. A 2012 analysis found that over the next century, beach nourishment could cost as much as $54 million per year.
Ocean City, Maryland
One of the busiest and most crowded beaches in the United States is Ocean City.
Ocean City’s beaches have typically been replenished every four years, but after a winter storm caused serious erosion in 2016, the city was forced to begin dredging and pumping sand on the beach ahead of schedule costing $12.7 million, as reported in WJZ 13.
Santa Monica, California
Like many of the beaches on this list, Los Angeles’ Santa Monica Beach is facing a problem with erosion.
Like all of Barcelona’s eight beaches, Barceloneta is a man-made creation.
In 2008 and 2010, a series of strong storms eroded large sections of several of Barcelona’s beaches, including Barceloneta. The city has repaired the beaches since but about half of the sand has been reclaimed by the sea.
With sea levels now expected to rise more than previously predicted, it will likely be difficult for Barcelona to maintain its status as a premier destination for beachgoers.
