South Los Angeles has seen a surge in black-owned coffee
shops over the last 15 months. Some attribute this to the closing of Magic
Johnson’s iconic Starbucks in 2018, leaving a void in the community. “Starblacks”,
as the locals called it, was located on the corner of La Cienega and Centinela
for 20 years and catered to mostly black patrons who spent their time playing
rounds of dominoes or high-level chess, working remotely, or discussing the
news of the day.
“Starblacks”, which was owned by Magic Johnson, left some
big shoes to fill. And these are the coffee shops and cafes that are up for the
challenge.
Hot and Cool Café opened its door in
2018. Owner Anthony Jolly has seen great success over the past year, with the café
being featured on an episode of Insecure.
The community meeting space serves more than just fresh-brewed coffee. You can
find art is on display, trap yoga classes are on the schedule, and food
pop-ups.
Los Angeles-born owners Ajay Relan and Yonnie Hagos opened Hilltop
Coffee + Kitchen to provide a fun environment for people to connect
with each other and themselves. The modern and airy space is home to a
full-kitchen offering a lunch and breakfast menu and, of course, coffee. Two
new locations recently opened, making Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen available in View
Park, Inglewood, and Eagle Rock.

Established in 2017, Sip & Sonder is owned by Shanita
Nicholas and Amanda-Jane Thomas. Sip & Sonder is the premier destination
for creatives, entrepreneurs, freelancers, curators, and everyone in between to
simply exist, grab a cup of coffee, connect, create, and put sonder into action
located in Downtown Inglewood.
More recently, husband and wife team Joe and Celia
Ward-Wallace opened South LA
Cafe in November 2019. Their mission is to build community through
coffee, culture, and connection. With a menu of healthy options, South LA Café is
committed to bringing the same quality food and drinks found in other
neighborhoods, but with pricing that is affordable in the South LA community

Oakland’s Red Bay Coffee will open in Jefferson Park next spring. The 11,000-square-foot space is said to channel the former Magic Johnson spot. Red Bay LA will be a cafe and roastery with a stage, performance area, workspace, and communal area all right in the middle of Jefferson Park.
A new survey of the rudest cities in the US declared those that live in the Big Apple to be quite unfriendly.
The study controlled by Business Insider states that 34.3 percent of those surveyed declared NYC to have the rudest inhabitants.
NYC beat out Los Angeles by almost twice as much. Of the 2,000 people surveyed, 19.7% said Los Angeles had the rudest people.
Following behind NYC and LA for the rudest people in the country are Washington, D.C., Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Buffalo, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
The rudest cities in America, ranked according to a new Insider survey https://t.co/teh4kfS8MX
The survey results compile two online polls from October and November. In the surveys, American adults were instructed to choose 5 rudest places from a list of the 50 largest metro areas in America.
However, this announcement doesn’t exactly come as a surprise to New Yorkers. According to Business Insider, historian of the Manhattan borough, Michael Miscione told The New York Times in 2011 that New Yorkers have been known for being rude since the 1700s.
When former President John Adams visited NYC he said, “I have not seen one real gentleman, one well-bred man, since I came to town. At their entertainments there is no conversation that is agreeable; there is no modesty, no attention to one another.”
He goes on to say, “They talk very loud, very fast and altogether. If they ask you a question, before you can utter three words of your answer, they will break out upon you again and talk away.”
At the end of the day, don’t let that mess up your chances of visiting one of the greatest cities in the world — sometimes, you just have to see for yourself!
Residents in South Los Angeles are making their message clear: they like their coffee black – as in Black-owned.
From Inglewood, View Park, Windsor Hills, and Jefferson Park, and neighborhoods in between, South Los Angeles is currently undergoing a cultural renaissance where the number of Black-owned cafes has increased in the last year.
According to the LA Eater, it all began when Magic Johnson’s “Starblacks” closed in Ladera Heights. For 20 years, Starblacks served as a safe space where African- Americans could talk news of days, work remotely, host meetings, and play games.
Its departure was significant from this historic African- American community.
Like many other major cities around the country, people of color are feeling the effects of gentrification –with chains like Starbucks being a leading indicatorthat housing prices are about to spike and a gentrifying neighborhood is right around the corner.
Black-Coffee Shops Emerge
In that same year, Starblacks closed, Anthony Jolly opened Hot And Cool Café. The café, known for its honey lattes and trap yoga, may look familiar as it the cafe was featured on the HBO show Insecure.
Speaking of Insecure, the show’s creator Issa Rae just recently announced that she is the newest Black-owned coffee shop co-owner in the area. Located in the View Park-Windsor Hills area, Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, a modern café where residents gather for coffee and community opened. According to LA Eater, the owners plan to open two additional locations in Los Angeles in Eagle Rock and Inglewood.
Another hotspot that happens to be Black-owned is Sip & Sonder in downtown Inglewood. In addition to coffee and a place to grab a quick bite, Sip & Sonder has become a staple for art shows, live performances, investor clubs, and more.
Husband and wife Joe and Celia Ward-Wallace just recently opened South LA Cafe to build something they said the Exposition Park/South Central community needed.
“I pass by South LA Cafe and slowly saw it turn from some building with graffiti to a nice little coffee shop,” one Reddit user said. “It’s perfect and what I’ve been wanting close by for a long time.”
“This makes me happy. Businesses owned by locals! More of this, bravo! Go southside!” another Reddit user stated.
“That’s awesome. I’m glad the residents are owning shops catering to their communities.”
SuperShuttle, the company responsible for the infamous blue-and-yellow vans that transport passengers to and from the airport, is going out of business.
The company along with its sister sedan service ExecuCar notified airports in early December that companies would cease operations at the end of the year, as reported in USA Today.
According to their website, SuperShuttle is listed at more than 60 locations across the United States, Europe, and South America.
“Unfortunately, our parent company has decided to cease SuperShuttle and ExecuCar operations nationwide effective 12/31 so we will not be continuing our service agreement into 2020,” Alan Gildersleeve, SuperShuttle general manager, reportedly told Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport officials in an email.
Los Angeles International Airport was also notified that SuperShuttle would halt its services, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times.
In recent weeks, the company pulled out of airports serving Burbank, Phoenix, Baltimore, and Minneapolis.
SuperShuttle was founded back in 1983 and despite being in service for more than three decades, has had significant competition from Uber and Lyft.
At LAX alone, shared van services have dropped by two-thirds
in the first half of 2019 compared with the first half of 2016, the Los Angeles
Times reports.
Trips on LAX’s FlyAway buses sank by two-thirds during that same timeframe and taxi trips fell by more than 35%. Meanwhile, the number of Uber and Lyft trips have more than doubled.
SuperShuttle will also lay off its employees. Customer service representative Ricky Heredia told the Los Angeles Times that he learned about the shutdown before his lunch break Thursday after his manager handed him a letter saying his job would end Dec. 31.
Customers have responded to the news as well.
“As a wheelchair user who travels, SuperShuttle has been a game-changer in getting to & from the airport with ease. This is upsetting to learn about.”
Twitter
“This is wild, considering we tried to book an Uber and a Lyft just now and not only is the price higher than what SuperShuttle ever was but with both services we couldn’t book a ride because there were too many requests in the area. Renting a car, way cheaper than Lyft or Uber,” a Twitter user stated.
One of the largest
and busiest airports in the world is run by a black woman.
Deborah Ale Flint
has served as the CEO of the Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA), which owns and operates
LAX and Van Nuys Airports, since 2015 after she was appointed by Los Angeles
Mayor Eric Garcetti.
LAX serves more than
80 million passengers a year, making it one of the busiest airports in the world
and in the United States.
During her time as CEO, Flint has transformed the airport to help enhance the experience of passengers traveling through Southern California. Her biggest accomplishment since joining LAWA is securing the largest public works agreements in the history of Los Angeles with the Landside Access Modernization Program (LAMP).
LAMP is a $5.5 billion solution aimed to fix
the crowded roadways and curbsides at and around LAX.
In addition, Ale Flint has been recognized for taking the lead on the modernization of LAX, which includes revamping terminals, replacing outdated equipment, expanding taxi lanes, improving security systems, and more, as reported in Biz Journals.
“I’m excited about
what is happening at LAX,” Ale Flint told the publication. “I look at it as
both a challenge and opportunity because we are poised to reinvent the
passenger experience at LAX.”
Prior To LAWA
Ale Flint came to LAWA from the Port of Oakland where she had held the position of aviation director since 2010, her bio explains.
While there, she
delivered the $480-milliion BART Airport Rail project; executed strategies to
stabilize and redesigned OAK’s customer experience to make the airport more
competitive.
Moving On
In April 2020, Ale Flint will step down from her role in Los Angeles to serve as President and CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority –which operates the largest and busiest airport in Canada.
“It is bittersweet to be leaving LAWA, but, as a Canadian-born airport executive, I am looking forward to this homecoming and to leading Toronto Pearson, a rising and notable star on the international airport stage,” Flint said in a statement.
If you thought she had her hands in a million things already, Issa Rae is now co-owner and partner of Inglewood’s newest Black-owned and people of color owned coffee shop and kitchen.
Hilltop Coffee and Kitchen opened its doors today, and it will definitely be a space that creatives of all genres will want to gather at.
“I’ve always wanted a coffee shop in my neighborhood,” Issa Rae said in a video on Instagram. “Coffee shops facilitate productivity in so many ways, they facilitate collaboration. I personally have done all of my writing in coffee shops. So it always disappointed me that there weren’t any that were Black-owned or people of color owned in my neighborhood.”
Los Angeles natives Ajay Relan and Yonnie Hagos created the brand and later asked Issa to join in as partner and co-owner.
“We could not have found a more authentic partner whose values and mission is aligned with ours,” Ajay Relan said.
The name, Hilltop, is said to represent the climb that creators of all walks take to reach their dreams and goals while overcoming obstacles along the way.
The space located at 170 N. La Brea, is airy and bright with lots of natural light coming in. There will be collaboration events happening often, including a once a month open mic night. There is also a second location at 4427 W. Slauson Avenue.
After working 57 years with the company, a 79-year-old Delta Air Lines flight attendant was fired for allegedly stealing a milk carton and additional items. Now she is fighting back by filing a lawsuit against the airline.
Ida Gomez Llanos is accusing both Delta and her coworkers of orchestrating what she calls a “smear campaign” against her because of her $250,000 salary, which is approximately four times more than the average flight attendant salary of $56,000.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Llanos confirmed that she had been employed with Delta since 1962 until she was fired this past April. She stated that before she was let go, she was ranked as the Number One flight attendant in the Los Angeles area and ranked fifth in the country.
Her rank as the most senior flight attendant in LA came with great perks that other flight attendants did not have, including priority overtime shifts. She said her colleagues “grew envious,” which is part of the reason why she believes they started a “smear campaign” against her.
“They accused me of sleeping, of taking chocolates, not doing a good job – but my letters from passengers proved that wrong,” Llanos said. “They accused me of not being able to arm or disarm the doors. But we all go through training every year, and we have to pass that training or we do not fly.”
According to Llanos, one flight attendant put Bailey’s Irish Cream in her coffee and accused her of taking a chocolate bar. But Llanos denies the allegations stating that she “avoids sugar” because she predisposed to diabetes as a result of her family’s health history.
The lawsuit describes Llanos as an “exemplary employee” who received many company awards and positive reviews from Delta customers.
“I haven’t called in sick for thirty or forty years,” she told DailyMailTV. “Every year they had a banquet for the top 1% who had the most letters from the customers. I went to that three times. I was nominated by the chairman’s club. I’ve had Flight Attendant of the Quarter; you get a little statue.”
She added that despite her record and awards, her bosses came up with false claims because it would save the company money.
“They want to get rid of the older flight attendants,” she said. “I think they put us on higher surveillance. It’s because they have to pay us so much because we’ve been there forever and your pay scale goes up each year. I think they can hire four newer flight attendants for what they pay me.”
A spokesperson from Delta told DailyMailTV, “when a violation of company policy is identified or inappropriate conduct is reported, Delta conducts a thorough investigation to determine the appropriate course of action – considering many factors, including the employee’s overall performance record and length of service. Decisions like these are not made lightly or without a comprehensive review by many.”
