Woman Gets Stopped By TSA For Flamin’ Hot Cheetos

By ,

A passenger’s snack choice of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos recently caused an extra layer of security screening at Los Angeles International Airport.

Emily Mei, 25, told USA TODAY that TSA officers at LAX pulled her aside Friday to search her carry-on bag which contained at least 12 bags of the Hot Cheetos.

“I thought they were going to reach their hand in and see that there was nothing suspicious,” she told USA Today.

But to her surprise, officers began inspecting each bag individually using test strips.

Mei, an Instagram influencer with more than 400,000 followers took to Twitter to show her followers what was going down.

“Will never forget the day TSA stopped me cuz they thought I was hiding (expletive) inside my bag cuz all I had was like 20 bags of Hot Cheetos,” she wrote.

If you’re wondering why she had so many bags of the spicy snack, Mei told said they were for her friends back in South Korea.

“Apparently it’s hard to get in Korea, so my friends always ask me to bring it for them LOL,” she revealed.

She told USA Today that she always makes space in her luggage for American foods and snacks, including cereal, candy, and clearly, Cheetos.

She stuffed the Hot Cheetos in her carry-on because she couldn’t fit them all in her suitcase.

TSA hasn’t responded to the incident but Frito-Lay, the brand behind the snacks applauded her for the effort of trying to get the cheese puffs in a different location.

“The thought that someone would take the time to bring bags of Flamin’ Hot Cheetos to a friend halfway around the world – and seeing the video of it in action – made us smile,” said Brandi Ray, senior director of marketing for Cheetos, in a statement.

The First Cannabis Cafe In The United States Has Opened And Its Head Chef Is A Black Woman

By ,

You may want to start planning a trip to LA soon because the U.S.’s first cannabis cafe just opened in the City of Angels.

Lowell Farms: A Cannabis Cafe opened Tuesday and merges cuisine and cannabis. According to CNN, the restaurant says it is the first business in the United States to receive a fully legal cannabis consumption license out of 300 applicants.

The head chef of Lowell Farms, Andrea Drummer, has tailored the menu at the restaurant to be a reflection of Californian cuisine. There will be seasonal dishes made to complement the effects of THC.

Lowell Farms says the dishes served will not be infused with cannabis because of the current cannabis legislation.

A spokeswoman of Lowell Farms told CNN, “Lowell Farms: A Cannabis Cafe will serve as a welcoming and safe environment for all to enjoy and learn about consumption in the newly legal world of cannabis.”

Other offerings of the restaurant will be a “first-of-its-kind nightlife experience” and “tableside flower service” which will have a “flower host” explaining to customers the various strains along with flavors and effects.

When you visit the cafe, you will be able to use bongs, joints, and pipes to smoke marijuana. There will be both smoking and non-smoking designated areas within the 5,900-square foot space.

In a statement, the restaurant says: “Lowell Farms: A Cannabis Cafe was created because we believed there needed to be a destination for everyone to openly enjoy cannabis in the community. Lowell Cafe is a welcoming space for those who are cannabis connoisseurs and those who are cana-curious and looking to experience cannabis in a welcoming atmosphere.”

Edibles will also be sold at the restaurant.

Here’s Why The First Black-Owned Grocery Store In Compton Is Still Thriving

By ,

Since 2017, Kia Patterson has independently owned and operated the first black-owned grocery store in Compton, Grocery Outlet, providing organic produce at an affordable price in the underprivileged neighborhood.

The USDA named Compton a “food desert” in 2013, referring to the city’s insufficient access to affordable, healthy foods, compared to other neighborhoods. The executive director of the Community Health Councils Lark Galloway-Gilliam once called the population “malnourished,” referring to the boatload of local fast-food restaurants. He works to encourage healthy policies in South Los Angeles. “What we don’t have is healthy, fresh, crisp fruits and vegetables. In its place, we see processed foods,” he said.

Residents complained of having to drive miles to other areas just to buy fruits and veggies that weren’t “rotten, unripe or flavorless.” Despite the implementation of weekly farmer’s markets and other health food events, Compton still wasn’t getting enough until Patterson came along.

Facebook

Grocery Outlet guarantees their customers 100% satisfaction, by hiring local friendly staff, and organic products at a cost of 60% less than traditional grocery stores. The 38-year-old entrepreneur and Compton native took ownership of the store after completing training with the company and developing a business plan that offered jobs to her family and the community.

“I have my cousins working here with me, my brother, my niece, and nephew. That’s really encouraging and with most companies, you’re not allowed to do that,” Patterson told LA Sentinel. “They really care. A lot of other companies are primarily about money and profit. They lose the people portion of the business and that’s the main purpose of Grocery Outlet. You’re able to work with your family.”

Her background and experience came from working for another grocery franchise, Smart & Final. While there, she was recruited by Grocery Outlet to help expand their grocery chain with 100 additional stores in Los Angeles. I’d like to think her hands-on approach and willingness to work right alongside her staff contributed her ownership and why the store has still thrived over the last two years.

Patterson supports local youth and education and gives back to her community through fundraisers for various schools and helping college students establish a low-cost food pantry with El Camino Compton Center.

“It’s not only about providing good-quality food. What I’ve always been about is giving back. It’s about playing that role, helping with fundraising with schools, and being there not just to say, ‘Hey, come get your groceries from me,’ but also helping out the community,” she told Civil Eats.

Visit Pattern and Grocery Outlet in Compton at 2175 West Rosecrans Avenue, open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The Best Recurring Events In LA’s Black Nightlife Scene

“Where are all the Black people at?”

It’s a common question among Black tourists and those who have recently relocated to LA. The city is abundant with Black history and legendary Black-owned businesses, but there’s no consensus on where young Black professionals are going out and letting loose in their time off.

Local Black DJs and musicians are changing that with weekly and monthly residencies at LA’s up-and-coming nightlife spots. Shake a tail feather at any one of these recurring dance nights:

Nebula at The Library Bar

You’ll hear everything from salsa to reggae to afrobeat and funk, so come ready to move your feet. The next edition of World 70 is this Saturday, August 24 from 10 pm to close, with free entry all night.
Silent Party

The highly anticipated Trap ‘n’ Twerk edition of LA’s Silent Party is coming up fast on Saturday, August 31st at the British pub Pig ‘n’ Whistle. Don a pair of headphones and bounce between three channels with DJs playing your favorite trap and twerk hits. Tickets start at $8 and can be purchased here

How You Feel Dance Party

How You Feel Dance Party is a great place to shake off your workweek stress and embrace the weekend. You’ll find DJ Kene & Friends in the stage room playing r&b, hip hop, classics, “nu sh*t,” and more, or switch it up in Dance Therapy with Def Sound who provides “supreme vibes that’ll be just what your body needs.” The party is free all night every Friday from 10pm to close at The Virgil.

Afrofuturist Block Party

Attendees are invited to celebrate the limitless innovation of Afrofuturism with hands-on art workshops, food, and live music performances.

Home to the spiritual Incan ruins of Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and the Amazon rainforest, Peru is the perfect place to reflect, recharge, and focus on what’s next.

If you want some adventure, Peru has a ton of hiking trails that will get your heart pumping, while you get up close and personal with the country’s natural wonders.

The Inca Trail is Peru’s most popular route, but feel free to trek the Lost City of Choquequirao or the Huayhuash Circuit.

London, United Kingdom

London is the kind of city with so much going on, those negative thoughts will be drowned out.

What’s also great about London is that you can choose to explore it alone or with someone else. In addition, your chances of meeting other travelers are pretty high as London is a top destination for solo travelers.
