Belize may be a tiny country but there are lots to do to fuel your curiosity and adventurous side. This Central American nation is a melting pot of cultures, languages, and food, making it an interesting vacation destination. Although the official language is English, many of the locals speak Spanish, Kriol, Maya, or Garifuna.

Of course while in Belize, relaxing at the beach and eating great food is a must, but here are five attractions that will have you on your toes.

Visit Mayan Ruins

Caracol, located on the border of Belize is great for a less crowded Mayan ruins experience. You will be able to climb the highest pyramid and take in amazing views of nearby Guatemala.

To get to Caracol, it is recommended to hire a tour guide or rent a 4×4.

Another ruin to visit is Altun Ha, located 30 miles from Belize City. The stone Mayan structures will draw you in and you’ll even be able to climb to the top of the 54 ft. tall central temple.

Lastly, visit the Mayan ruins of Xunantunich, located near San Ignacio, one of the prime places to stay in Belize. These ruins are one of the top attractions in the country and are accessible by taking a bus and walking or hiring a taxi.

I AM C.U.L.T.U.R.E.D. Helps Black High Schoolers Travel The World

By ,

Since Karmia Berry launched  I AM C.U.L.T.U.R.E.D. in 2017, she has helped at least 30 African American 10th-grade high school students travel abroad.

With the goal to promote self-empowerment and an appreciation for cultural richness and diversity, the Brooklyn-based organization has coordinated international trips to Cuba, Belize, and most recently, Ghana for the “Year of the Return” campaign.

The acronym “C.U.L.T.U.R.E.D.” connects to a self-affirmation used throughout the program to develop dreamers, believers, and achievers: Confident, Unique, Leading, Tenacious, Unstoppable, Regal, Educated, and Daring.

In an interview with Berry, she discussed what inspired the organization:

Travel Noire: What inspired you to launch I AM C.U.L.T.U.R.E.D.

Berry: I am an avid traveler. I’ve been traveling since I was very small because it was very important for my parents to expose me to other cultures through traveling abroad. What that did for me socially, intellectually, and also psychologically, I wanted to pass that on and pay it forward to young people.

TN: Why do you focus on 10th-grade students?

Berry: Because that is a very vital time. They just completed their adjustment year coming into high school and are going to start preparing for their college prep courses. Allowing them to travel and explore other cultures really does spark ideas.

It motivates them, gives them self empowerment, builds confidence, and it improves test scores. It also improves cultural awareness and sensitivity. I felt 10th grade would be the best time.

TN: What do the students learn throughout this two-year program?

Berry: Our program starts off with the cultural series where we are preparing them for the country that we are traveling to. That means educating them on foreign currency to prepare them on how to convert the U.S. dollar to the country’s currency. We are learning foreign languages and a crash course on key phrases they can say while they’re traveling.

We also teach culinary and wellness classes where they are participating in a cooking class and learning about fashion.

We don’t want our young people to just hop on a plane and expose them to a new world without proper preparation.

Group Drum Session in Belize Photo courtesy of  I AM C.U.L.T.U.R.E.D.

TN: What do you envision for your organization 10 or 20 years from now?

Berry: We want to impact more high school students, of course. We want to create and uplift more global citizens, specifically our young brown and black kings and queens.

We want to create more opportunities where our young people are more culturally aware, and then one day, are going back into their leadership roles as educators, doctors, lawyers, entrepreneurs and paying it forward as a humanitarian philanthropist.

TN: So, where are you all going next?

Berry: Great question! We have an annual fundraising gala to raise money so that our young people don’t have to pay the full amount to travel. During our gala, that happens every spring, we ask our guests to vote on where we should go next. I don’t have the answer just yet, but so far, we’ve traveled to the Caribbean, Central America, and Africa.

Flight Deal: BWI, Baltimore To Belize As Low As $278

By ,

Hey DMV! Are you looking to getaway for a few days this fall? Craving blue waters and white sands for a little recharge? Well, we’ve got you covered.

Several airlines have dropped prices on flights from Washington area airport BWI into Belize City, Belize. At the time of this post we found the lowest price to be $278 roundtrip via American Airlines.

This low price flight option seems to be available via Delta and United Airlines as well. It all depends on the dates that you choose. As of now, the date range for the deal spans mostly between September and October. You may be able to find options later into the year as well.

For this post, we searched 9/11-9/14. We were able to pull this deal using Google Flights. You can simply enter BWI as your departure and BZE as the destination. From there, scroll over to September and October. The lowest prices available at the time of your search will show up in green.

It appears that no matter which airline you choose, this will be a basic economy fare. Meaning there will be some restrictions under your ticket. You will want to carefully read your airlines rules as each one differs. The biggest takeaway is that you will likely not be able to select your seat prior to your day of travel and you won’t be able to make changes to the ticket once it is confirmed.

Five Reasons To Put Central America On Your Bucket List

By ,

Central America consists of seven countries —  Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama — that form the southernmost tip of North America. The region is bordered by Mexico to the north, Colombia to the south, the Caribbean to the east, and the Pacific to the west, resulting in a unique blend of Indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean influences.

Over the years, different areas of Central America have suffered from political unrest, economic troubles, and above average crime rates, causing many to avoid the region altogether. Here are just a few reasons why you should put Central America on your bucket list:

1. Natural wonders unlike anywhere in the world

From white sand beaches to active volcanoes, Central America is an ideal region for nature lovers. If you’re looking for a beach bum vacation, head to Costa Rica and unplug on the near-deserted Tamarindo Beach or travel a bit further south and be amazed by Panama’s aptly-named Starfish Beach.

If you love seeing wildlife in its natural habitat, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to do so in Costa Rica, which has a larger monkey population than humans! Head to the Caribbean Coast between the months of March and October to see Hawksbill sea turtles nesting and hatching or visit Manuel Antonio National Park to see three of the four monkey species that call Costa Rica home.

2. Discover Indigenous and Afro-Latin cultures

Central America was colonized by the Spanish, who used enslaved Africans for labor and exploited theIndigenous populations who already existed in the region. Regardless of which of these cultures you feel a kinship with, you’ll find plenty to dig into.

If ancient ruins are your thing, head to Tikal, a massive Mayan city shrouded in the northern jungles of Guatemala. Once you’re there, tack on a trip to nearby Copan, Honduras, where ancient Mayans built a “City of Kings.”

If you’re interested in Afro-Latin history and culture, you’ll find plenty to study in Panama, which has a history of African enslavement, but also attracted immigration from nearby Caribbean islands while the Panama Canal was being built in the early 20th century.

3. Adventure sports

Central America also offers plenty of options for adventurous travelers who want to get their pulses racing. Roast marshmallows on one of Guatemala’s active volcanoes or sleep on the crater overnight. Near Leon, Nicaragua, you can race down the Cerro Negro volcano slope on a simple wooden or metal board.

Honduras offers lower than average prices on scuba diving excursions and numerous clear water beaches for snorkeling. You can go white water rafting on the Pacuare River in Costa Rica or surf the infamous waves of El Salvador’s Costa Del Sol beach.

4. Can’t beat the price

With the exception of Costa Rica which tends to be a little more expensive, Central America gives you plenty of bang for your buck. The region attracts less tourism than their neighbors in the Caribbean and prices often reflect that. Haggling is common and smart budget travelers will find it easy to stretch their dollars. Head to El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, or Panama for cheat eats, accommodations, and tours.

5. Tourism dollars help boost local economies

One of the most effective ways to support struggling countries like Nicaragua and Honduras is to give them your tourism dollars. Check to see if there are any travel advisories and plan to avoid those areas. Travel can often be a useful tool in helping us understand the nuances of a destination that the news might gloss over.
