Beyond The Beach: Exploring The Food, Art, And Adventure Of Aruba

By ,

Aruba. You probably have visions of white sand beaches and pink flamingos, but the island that’s located in the southern Caribbean Sea and less than 20 miles from Venezuela has so much more.

Dutch is the official language, Papiamento is the native language and the island has more than 90 different nationalities. As varied as the people are, so is the terrain, which makes it perfect for the adventure lover or any art seeker.

For Adventurers

Of course, you’ll probably make a visit or two to Arashi, Eagle or Palm beach but you’d be silly not to partake in a bit of adventure.

A popular and fun option is heading to Arikok National Park, which occupies 20 percent of the island. Anyone will tell you to head there early and that’s not just to beat the crowds but because the Aruban sun is no joke. Take a guided tour to learn all about the island’s beauty. The location is the perfect example of Aruba’s varying terrain. One minute you’re trekking through the bush and an hour or so later the tour ends at Dos Playa beach.

If you want to ditch the walking and sit back, a jeep tour with ABC Tours Aruba is a must.

Even if you’re not highly prone to motion sickness, you might want to pop a Dramamine in advance. The ride is rugged and you’ll feel every bump, turn and curve. But the beauty you’ll experience is well worth it. You can choose which tour you’d like, but most guides all make a stop at a natural pool or “conchi” so you can take a dip where the waters are serene and relaxing. This is perfect for a group outing.

For Art Lovers

The art in Aruba is another aspect that can’t be missed. If there’s one area of the island to check out, it has to be San Nicolas. Just south of the capital, Oranjestad, the area used to be known as Chocolate City due to African inhabitants.

Photo courtesy of Patrice J. Williams

Today, it’s the destination for art everywhere you turn. Literally down any corner, you’ll see an interesting mural and it’s also home to the annual Aruba Art Fair. Also, while most hotels aren’t destinations for art, House of Mosaic is probably like no other hotel you’ve stayed at. If you love all things glam, texture, and awe-worthy, then the hotel meets art gallery space is worth checking out.

For The Foodies

Finally, you need some great eats. All the adventure might mean you want to take it light, and Garden Fresh is a natural option. You can’t go wrong with any of the green smoothies, salads, or bowls packed with chicken and shrimp. It’s healthy food that will actually leave you satisfied.

Photo courtesy of Patrice J. Williams

On the flip side, when you want something a bit more downhome and a favorite with locals and tourists, Zeerovers is a must. Some destinations are undeservedly overhyped, but this seafood spot is on point. The no-frills restaurant is right on the water and serves up the daily catch that’s always fried but never greasy. Order a basket or two of fish, shrimp, fries and plantains for the entire table. It’s seasoned to perfection, but don’t forget the papaya hot sauce. This place gets packed, especially on a Sunday, so get there by noon.

Plan Your 2020 Travel To These Top Destinations In The Caribbean, Central America And Mexico

By ,

The last month of 2019 is quickly approaching, which means it’s time to start planning travel for 2020. If you’re looking for destinations to relax in warm weather, get a bit of adventure and try delicious foods, you may want to head to Mexica, Central America or the Caribbean.

To make things easier, check out a list of the best places to visit in these regions in 2020, according to Fodor’s Go List

The Caribbean

Aruba

Aruba is a Dutch Caribbean island known for its spectacular beaches. The island offers amazing dining and shopping that competes on an international level.

Head to Aruba on Memorial Day weekend for the Soul Beach Music Festival or maybe Island TakeOver in the latter part of October. Aruba has its own Fashion Week in April and Aruba Art Fair in November.

You can also do typical island activities such as lounging on the beach and snorkeling.

Bahamas

The Bahamas is known for its white-sand beaches and friendly locals as well as being super close (less than 200 miles) to Florida, making it an easily accessible destination.

There are over 700 islands and cays which make up the Bahamas. Many of those islands were severely damaged by Hurricane Dorian in September 2019 but there are 14 islands (Nassau and Paradise Island included) that are undamaged.

Enjoy delicious food and tasty rum while visiting this destination. You can also swim with spotted pigs, go surfing or get an Ayurvedic massage.

Whatever you choose to do in the Bahamas — you’re guaranteed to have a great time.

Montserrat

This island is very calm and is the epitome of a Caribbean getaway. The island has a population of fewer than 6,000 people after volcanic eruptions in the 1990s.

If you love nature, you’ll absolutely adore the lush rainforest of Montserrat. Visiting Montserrat’s National Trust Botanical Gardens is a must as well as the Montserrat Observatory for breathtaking views.

There are eight black-sand beaches on the island as well as Rendezvous Beach, a white-sand beach.

St. Barth’s

The wealthy and famous have been vacationing in St. Barth’s for years but so can you! Visit the capital city Gustavia of shopping, great restaurants, and people watching.

Relax on Colombier Beach but be aware that you can only access the beach by boat or on foot.

You can also head to the Grand Cul de Sac to see sea turtles!

Mexico

Valladolid, Yucatán

Known as the “Capital of the Mayan east”, Valladolid is the second-largest city in the Yucatán State.

Take a stroll through the city and you’ll be taken back to the 19th-century with its colonial architecture and a historic downtown quarter.

Dine at one of the restaurants while strolling to try local dishes such as papadzules (similar to a vegetarian enchilada and covered with a sauce made using pumpkin seeds), marquesitas (crispy pancakes stuffed with cheese and chocolate).

6.- Sirve y disfruta . . . . #vegan #vegano #vegansofig #veganism #crueltyfree #veganlife #veganfoodporn #eatdrinkvegan #veggie #veggies #vegetarian #playadelcarmen #foodporn #healthy #lifestyle #veganlifestyle #travel #mexico #traveler #yucatan #naturelover #freedom #mexicanfood #papadzules #tacos #vegantacos #mexicanfood

San Jose has lots of up-and-coming neighborhoods where you’ll find indigenous foods made only with the freshest ingredients.

Start Planning Now If You Want To Experience Carnival In These 15 Caribbean Countries

By ,

Carnival in the Caribbean is like no other party experience in the world. People from all over the world gather to celebrate, whine, and drink from dusk till’ dawn and throughout the day. During Carnival season, you’ll experience the true essence of West Indian culture through music, dance, and contagious vibrant energy.

The first Carnival in the Caribbean was in Trinidad and Tobago, with steel bands, whining in the road, exquisite costumes and other fun activities. Carnival originated from Catholic traditions in Europe but West Indians have made it into their own form of an annual celebration.

After Trinidad started its carnival, other West Indian countries joined in and has attracted visitors from all around the world because of it.

Here are 15 Caribbean nations you should visit for Carnival:

Trinidad

Trinidad is infamous for having one of the largest parties in the Caribbean. Carnival started because slaves in Trinidad wanted to participate in the European masquerade balls and ended up creating their own.

Carnival in Trinidad happens on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and people from all over the world flock to the streets with their best costumes, ready to whine all day to the sound of soca and steel pans. The celebrations take place in the capital city of Port of Spain but other cities throughout the island celebrate as well.

Martinique

French and African cultures merge during Martinique’s Carnival which lasts for five days. Celebrations happen annually at either the end of February or beginning of March.

People dress up in costumes to sing, dance, and celebrate with a Carnival King or Vaval (a mannequin that is carried through the parade and made from paper or wood). There is also a Carnival Queen who is chosen by the people and has to sit next to the Vaval until the last day of Carnival when it is burned in a bonfire.

Puerto Rico

Carnival Ponceño is the name for carnival in Puerto Rico and happens in the city of Ponce during the week leading up to Lent. Celebrations occur all week and every day there are parties sand parades reflective of the Spanish influence on the island.

The first activity is the Parade of the Carnival King and the final ceremony is the “Burial of the Sardine”, also known as Entierro de la Sardina. Most of the ceremonies and costumes are seen during carnival in Puerto Rico are an homage to the Catholic roots of the nation.

The Bahamas

Nassau, Bahamas has a weeklong carnival during the first week of May. Reggae and soca artists perform while people party and enjoy the parade.

Hotels and Airbnbs get booked quickly during carnival in the Bahamas so it’s advised to book well in advance.

Jamaica

Bacchanal is one of the most anticipated carnivals in the Caribbean. Celebrations take place from March until the end of April in Ocho Rios and Kingston, Jamaica.

Carnival goers drench themselves in oil, paint, and glitter while wearing their costumes, dancing down the road to dancehall, reggae and soca music.

St. Maarten

April is the month where St. Maarten celebrate Carnival season with the theme “Come, Experience Life!”

Celebrations continue for 17 days with parades, dancing, reggae, and soca performances and people having the time of their lives wearing costumes and enjoying great vibes, food, and drinks.

Grenada

The island of spice has its own “Spice Mas” Carnival, occurring annually every August. There are events such as the ShortKnee masquerade, showcasing French and African culture with “Vieux corp” carnival gowns. Spice Mas occurs on the streets of St. George’s and you’ll see masqueraders parading through the street.

Dominican Republic

Music played during carnival in the Dominican Republic differs from soca and reggae on other islands. Instead, you’ll dance to the sounds of merengue and bachata. Carnival goers will be wearing African clothing and traditional Taino costumes. There are also people who wear masks with long horns and pointed teeth to resemble the Diablos (devils). During the month of February, parades happen every Sunday.

St. Vincent and the Grenadines

Carnival in St. Vincent and the Grenadines is known as Vincy Mas and is usually celebrated days before Lent but has recently become a summer celebration. You can expect beautiful costumes, calypso music and dancing in the streets. The last two days of Carnival

St. Lucia

Carnival in St. Lucia was initially celebrated at the beginning of the year, during Lent but is now celebrated in the Summer, during June. This month-long celebration is filled with pageants, steel band competitions, parties and even a Junior Carnival for kids. The last two days of Carnival consist of a Road March competition which is essentially a costume parade with lots of reggae, soca, and calypso music.

Aruba

Starting on New Year’s Day until the first week in March is when Aruba celebrates its Carnival. There is an annual carnival queen competition as well as parades and pageants. The Lighting Parade happens at night in February and illuminates the streets of Aruba.

The largest carnival parade on the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao) is the Grand Parade and it starts in San Nicolas making its way into the capital city of Oranjestad. To mark the end of Carnival celebrations, a life-sized model called King Momo is burned.

Curaçao

From January until March, you can enjoy the carnival in Curaçao. There are King and Queen competitions for both teenagers and adults, a children’s parade and street parades. The two major events, Gran March (“The Grand Parade”) and the March di Despedida (“the Farewell March”) both happen at the end of the carnival season.

Dominica

In February, Dominica celebrates Mas Domnik, also known as Real Mas. This carnival is a fusion of African culture, French masquerade traditions, and Caribbean culture. Events happen during the Monday and Tuesday prior to Ash Wednesday. Leading up to the main shows are concerts, Calypso shows, and pageants.

Guadeloupe

Guadeloupe celebrates Carnival starting in January until Ash Wednesday. The Opening Parade and the Grande Parade happen in the capital city, Basse-Terre. You can expect a Carnival King and Queen competition as well as singing and dance contests. The symbolic model for Carnival, King Vaval, is burnt to signal the end of Carnival season on Ash Wednesday.

Barbados

We all know Rihanna is the queen of Crop Over but what you may not know is this celebration started in the 1700s to celebrate the end of sugar cane harvest. The sugar cane industry has since been in decline but Crop Over is still in full swing. Festivities begin in May or June and last until the first Monday in August with The Grand Kadooment parade being the biggest event. Crop Over festivities includes Bridgetown’s craft and food market, Crop Over King and Queen competitions, and Kiddies Kadooment.

Here’s What You Should Know About The Street Art Capital Of The Caribbean

By ,

When you think of Aruba, what comes to mind? Most people think of crisp, blue waters and white sands, while others may think of watching the sunset with a cocktail in hand.

While Aruba does have all of the above, it is also home to an art district that attracts artists and travelers globally.

San Nicolas, located 20 miles south of Palm Beach is a vibrant arts district which boasts an outdoor gallery of 44 murals.

Aruba Mural Tours has walking tours, taking travelers through the downtown streets and there is a workshop with local artists, allowing you to create your own painting.

San Nicolas is the second-largest city in Aruba but its downtown area has been lackluster for many years. It was first deserted in 1985 when Exxon closed its oil refinery. Residents and businesses left San Nicholas which resulted in many empty storefronts.

Locals and tourists started flocking to the capital, Oranjestad and Palm Beach, making these areas popular destination. That is, until 2015 when Aruban Tito Bolivar visited Bogota, Colombia and was intrigued by the power street art had in changing various neighborhoods.

Bolivar decided he would take this strategy back home to Aruba and resurrect the once dead San Nicolas. It was a risky decision, considering Aruba was mostly known for its beaches.

Bolivar created ArtisA (meaning “Art Is Aruba”), a group which organizes the mural tours and the Aruba Art Fair. The art fair is a three-day fair which helped to build the art scene on the island. It has a turnout of about 10,000 people annually.

The art fair first began in 2016 and Bolivar invited 100 Aruban an international to participate at the launch.

“During the art fair we always leave murals behind as a present,” says Bolivar to Forbes.

A lot of the art featured pays homage to the culture of Aruba. For example, one of the murals features a green-feathered prikichi, which is the national bird of Aruba.

“It [the murals] has revived a forgotten city and now people from all over the world are visiting San Nicolas. San Nicolas is the new place to be now,” says Bolivar.

Family Vacation

Aruba and The Bahamas are excellent choices if you plan on traveling with the whole family.  With multiple options to choose from when it comes to family-friendly resorts and activities for all ages, these islands will keep everyone happy.

The Hilton Aruba Caribbean Resort & Casino offers a babysitting service, child care centers, and even a day camp onsite to give you a few moments to yourself. If the Bahamas sound like a better option, The Cove at Atlantis is a huge resort that offers tons of options for kids like a water park, kids’ pools, a movie theater, and much more.

Although Aruba has pretty much year-round perfect temperatures, be sure to check the seasons for The Bahamas as hurricanes are known to disrupt travel to the islands during the low season.

Looking for Adventure

If you are looking for a vacation filled with water sports, hiking, and overall outdoor adventures, think about heading to Nevis or the Cayman Islands. Both islands can claim stunning natural beauty and incredible water sports, but there are a few differences between the two.

Nevis is a small island directly adjacent to St. Kitts and offers some of the best hiking and water sports in the Caribbean. Nevis Peak is a famous and potentially active volcano that sits in the center of the island. With a 3,200 foot elevation, hikes up this mountain offer breathtaking views and a day of adventure. The island’s clear waters are also perfect for snorkeling with sea turtles, wakeboarding or stand-up paddleboarding.

The Cayman Islands include three islands located in the Caribbean just off the coasts of Cuba and Jamaica. As the birthplace of recreational diving, the islands have numerous diving sites that attract tourists from all over the world. From the iconic Seven Mile Beach to Stingray Bay and the USS Kittiwake, a former submarine which now houses sea creatures nearly 60 feet under the surface, this is an adventure seeker’s paradise.

Relaxing on the Beach

Making it to the top of the list of Forbes Best Caribbean Beaches for 2019 are Anguilla and Antigua. Both of these Caribbean islands have some of the most pristine beaches in the world. With white sandy coastlines and crystal clear water, if you are searching for a beach vacation either one of these locations will do just fine.

Shoal Bay in Anguilla is home to two miles of picture-perfect beaches with neighboring bars, restaurants, and resorts to add a little variety. Forbes.com also mentions Maundays Bay, Meads Bay, Rendezvous Bay, Merrywing Bay, and Savannah Bay as beach destination runners up.

Darkwood Beach in Antigua is located on the western coast of the island. This beach is a better option if you are looking for a slice of isolation, quiet, or an escape from reality. The undeveloped paradise doesn’t have any buildings and very few tourists. Forbes’ notable runner-ups include Valley Church Beach, Dickenson Bay, Runaway Bay, Ffrye’s Bay, Crab Hill Bay, and Half Moon Bay.

Romantic Getaway

If a romantic getaway is in your future, St. Barts or Turks and Caicos offer luxury, seclusion, and bliss for two. Just image couples massages overlooking the Caribbean and uninterrupted sunset strolls along sandy beaches. These islands offer a slice of paradise that will bring any couple closer together.

St. Barts may have a higher price tag than some of its neighboring islands, but its Caribbean charm and natural beauty is the reason why honeymooners and couples flock to this island by the thousands each year. With 14 beaches including Anse des Flamands and Baie de St-Jean as well as oceanside restaurants such as On The Rocks, romance can be found at every corner.

With two hundred miles of white sand, exquisite reefs, and decadent restaurants, Turks and Caicos is another favorite destination for honeymooners and couples. If you prefer to stay away from large resorts, be sure to check out Parrot Cay which offers luxury amenities on its own private island.

As the capital and largest city in Aruba, Oranjestad is a charming city full of natural beauty and some of the warmest people you will ever meet.

Speaking of warm, Aruba is known as the “happy island” in the Caribbean due to its weather and consistently receives the least rainfall in the Southern Caribbean.

Aside from its beaches and near-perfect weather, the adventures off the sand will make your trip to Oranjestad unlike any other Caribbean destination.

For entry to Aruba’s backcountry, try a guided ATV adventure to ride through the island’s rocky terrain while visiting unspoiled territory.

A visit to Hooiberg should also be on your to-do-list.  Hooiberg, which translates to Haystack, is a volcanic formation that offers scenic views of the island and sea.

Chances are, you’re planning a trip to Aruba for the beach. The closest beach during your stay in Oranjestad is Surfside Beach, which is popular among the locals.

If you’re looking for a beach that’s less crowded, try Druif Beach instead.

Flamingo Island In Aruba: To Go Or Not To Go?

By ,

Spread across 40 acres of land is Renaissance Island, home to Aruba’s private beaches, including Flamingo Beach where hundreds of tourists flock to each year to take selfies with the island’s famous pink flamingos.

Related Post: The Caribbean Islands Should Be On Your 2019 Travel Bucket List

If you’re considering a trip to Aruba for its pink inhabitants, here are some things you should consider:

The Cost

The flamingos are located on a private island owned by Renaissance Aruba Resort & Casino, and while guests of the island have free access to the beaches, outsiders do not.

A day pass is about $125 for non-guests.

Here’s another thing: you can’t pre-book days passes. There are a limited number of passes so you will have to visit the resort’s reception in the morning and ask about availability. Day passes are not a guarantee to ensure that the island is not overcrowded.

What About Children?

The island is divided into sides, including the family side and the adults-only side. The flamingos are located on the adult side of the island and the resort restricts access for guests under the age of 18 years of age, according to the company website.

Getting There

The only way to get to the beaches is by boat. Complimentary water taxis leave every 15 minutes from both Renaissance Resorts.

Is It Worth It?

If your only goal is to take a picture with the flamingos and not stay at the resort, it may not be worth it.  $125 is pretty expensive for a picture with five-to-seven (at most) flamingos. Not to mention, you may not get access if the resort is full.

The best thing to do is book at least a one-night stay at the resort. You will have access to Flamingo Beach, Iguana Beach, and Coral Beach.

Activities on the resort include water activities like snorkeling, scuba diving and spas for relaxation.
