Man With Dog Allergy Kicked Off Airline After Refusing To Sit Next To Passenger With Dog

By ,

A black man is suing American Airlines for discrimination after he claims he was removed from first-class to accommodate another passenger’s support dog.

American Airlines confirmed with USA TODAY that passenger Dana Holcomb was removed from a connecting flight from Phoenix, Arizona to Austin, Texas, on April 14 after crewmembers made “all attempts to accommodate Mr. Holcomb.”

Holcomb, who was on his way back to Texas after celebrating his birthday in Las Vegas, said he had an allergic reaction to a passenger’s support dog. He said the passenger offered to switch seats but after no one volunteered, crew members and the pilot got involved, as reported on KWTX.

After questioning why he had to move to the back of the plane, Holcomb said staff told him that his only options were to move to the rear or get off the plane.

He was removed after employees said he was “confrontational,” a claim he denies.

According to the lawsuit, two passengers submitted sworn statements supporting Holcomb’s claims.

“What American Airlines is doing is discrimination,” Holcomb’s attorney, Reginald McKamie Sr, said during a press conference with local reporters. “They have repeatedly humiliated African American citizens by throwing them off the plane, leaving them with no way home, leaving them with no hotels, just throwing them off the plane.”

According to McKamie, his client was forced to stay overnight in Pheonix, without his luggage or medicine and forced to find another way home.

McKamie is seeking punitive and contractual damages for Holcomb, and the two are hoping the airline changes its policies on discrimination and how passengers are treated.

A statement from American Airlines reads:

“We are proud to serve customers of all backgrounds and are committed to providing a positive, safe travel experience for everyone who flies with us.

“Federal regulations require American Airlines to transport service and support animals. American makes every effort to accommodate all passengers, including those traveling with and seated near service or support animals. In the case of an allergy, we work to re-seat a passenger further away from the service or support animal. If the customer is still not comfortable flying, we will re-book them on the next available flight to their destination.”

“If a lawsuit is filed, American will review it and respond in court when appropriate.”

Best Destinations When You’re Low On Vacation Days

A recent study showed that Americans are not taking their vacations.

The research done by Kimble Applications revealed that at least 47 percent of Americans didn’t take any vacation last year and that at least 21 percent left more than five vacation days on the table.

Related Post: ‘Vacation Shaming’ Shouldn’t Stop Millennials From Requesting Time Off Work

But then there’s the rest of you who utilize those PTO days every chance you get and by the end of the year, you’re working extra hours to squeeze one last vacation in.

If you find yourself low on vacation days, one of the best things you can do to maximize paid time off is planning a trip on extended weekends like Memorial Day and Labor Day.

The key to finding a cheap flight deal for three-day holiday weekends is by booking early. A study conducted by CheapOair found that the best time to buy a flight is at least 70 days before departure to ensure the best deals.

With that being said, below is a list some of the best destinations when your low on vacation days:

Napa Valley, California

Napa Valley is a popular place and for good reason. Wine country boasts beautiful scenery, world-class spa treatments, and an even better food scene.

Its popularity, however, can come with a hefty price tag.

The good news is that you can enjoy Napa Valley on a budget by booking an Airbnb versus a hotel, which averages $175 per night.

Weekend trips to San Francisco from New York costs on average $257 round-trip, according to Google Flights.

During your visit, be sure to spend time at Brown Estate, a black-owned winery in downtown Napa.

Niagara Falls

Once known as the Honeymoon Capital of the world, Niagara Falls still has its charm and thrill for a quick and cheap getaway.

One of the best things about traveling to Niagara Falls is the fact that you have two different sides to choose from, either the New York State side or Canadian side, which also means you have various options in choosing how you will get there that matches your budget.

As a natural wonder of the world, you will find that there are plenty of things to do that won’t break the bank. Walking around Niagara Falls State Park, for example, is free.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan is one of the most accessible and affordable beach escapes in the Caribbean.

An extended weekend is plenty of time to get what way you need out of a vacation.

In just three days, you can relax on the beach, take a trip to the rain forest, enjoy the nightlife, and explore culture in Old San Juan.

Lower Antelope Canyon, Arizona

It seems like Antelope Canyon’s picturesque scenery allowed the destination to grow overnight and is now considered a “must-see” for tourists to Arizona.

Antelope Canyon includes two separate slot canyon sections known as Upper and Lower Canyon.

The Upper Canyon is the most popular but it’s pricier and there tend to be large crowds.

Lower Antelope Canyon is cheaper and less crowded.

The closest airport is in Las Vegas. Keep in mind that you do not need a reservation, but you will need a tour guide.

Baltimore tops the list due to its booming art scene and its reasonably priced gourmet restaurants. The city has dozens of historic churches, libraries, and monuments that are, of course, free to visit and art lovers will be thoroughly impressed by the caliber and volume of artwork in the cities’ top museums including American Visionary Art Museum and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Flagstaff, Arizona

Many of the best things to do in Flagstaff take place outdoors, making this a budget and adventure traveler’s paradise. According to travel.usnews.com, built along the railroad track – and what would become Route 66 – the Historic Downtown and Railroad District is a pedestrian-friendly area filled with historic 1900s-era buildings that have been converted to shops. There are also numerous hiking trails and eco-tours of the desert countryside and iconic red rocks.

5 Stunning Sights in Arizona

By ,

Arizona, the 6th largest state in the US is home to some of the most breathtaking views in the world. While the state is best known for its desert landscape, incredibly picturesque mountains and plateaus are found in more than half of the state. These photos below capture some of the unbelievable beauty found here:

1. Sonoran Desert

arizona-sunset

The Sonoran Desert is an arid region covering 120,000 square miles! Some of it is in southwestern Arizona and southeastern California, but most of it lies in the western half of the state of Sonora, Mexico. This is the hottest of North America’s deserts, but a distinct rainfall pattern produces a high biological diversity. The Sonoran Desert includes 60 mammal species ( including the roadrunner and the only population of Jaguars in the US), 350 bird species, over 100 reptile species, over 1000 native bee species, and more than 2000 native plant species! You may be able to spot some wildlife yourself while enjoying a desert Hummer tour with or enjoying a breath-taking hot air balloon ride with Hot Air Expeditions.

2. Paria Canyon

This mind-boggling photo is a picture taken at Coyote Buttes – a section of the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness that spans South Central Utah and North Central Arizona. The Coyote Buttes area is an exposure of Jurassic Navajo sandstone. The area includes dramatic swirling erosional rock formations such as The Wave.  Additionally, a dinosaur trackway is found in the area and actually provides evidence of a variety of dinosaurs! However, you would have to be very fortunate enough to visit here. You must obtain a hiking permit in advance to visit Paria Canyon and this is not easy to come by.  However, if you do obtain a permit, several companies host tours here including Vermillion Cliffs and Dreamland Tours.

3. Monument Valley

Ballooning The Monuments

Monument Valley is officially a large area that includes much of the area surrounding Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, a Navajo Nation equivalent to a national park. You must pay an access fee and drive through the park on a 17-mile (27 km) dirt road (a 2-3 hour trip). Parts of Monument Valley are accessible only by guided tour, such as Mystery Valley and Hunts Mesa.

4. The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a geological masterpiece carved by the Colorado River and managed by Grand Canyon National Park, the Hualapai Tribal Nation, and the Havasupai Tribe. It is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and the second largest canyon in the world. The picture above is of the scenic Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado.

Havasu Falls, pictured above, is a waterfall of Havasu Creek, located in the Grand Canyon. It is located within Havasupai tribal lands. Arizona’s all-time record high is 128°F (53°C) recorded at nearby Lake Havasu City on June 29, 1994, and also on July 5, 2007.  There are several wonderful, and economical, Viator tours to see the Grand Canyon either from Las Vegas or from Phoenix.

5. Sedona

While exploring the Grand Canyon is a thrilling experience, you won’t want to miss Sedona as part of your Arizona adventure.  Sedona, located in the north east of the state, offers inspiring overlooks, hundreds of miles of hiking and biking trails and beautiful red rock vistas. It is home to its own haven of impressive canyons – including Bell Rock (pictured above), Oak Creek Canyon & Cathedral Rock.  One must-see attraction in Sedona is The Chapel of the Holy Cross, a Roman Catholic chapel built directly into its buttes! With sights like these, a trek to Arizona will clearly be an exciting and unforgettable one!
