If you had to pick the top country to visit in the world, what would it be? Judging by your Instagram timeline, you’d think most answers would state somewhere in the Caribbean or a European country.

Both answers would be wrong, according to Lonely Planet. The top country to visit in 2019 is Sri Lanka. After years of war and tsunami recovery, this comes as a complete surprise, but the southern India country is known for way more than that.

An array of religions and cultures, beautiful temples, vibrant wildlife, a vastly growing surf scene and to top it off, the people, who continue to defy all odds with their welcome and friendliness, make Sri Lanka so appealing. Regardless of the country’s rebuilding efforts, travelers can’t seem to get enough of the country’s glorious wonders.

In a press release, Lonely Planet says “there’s now more than ever for families, adrenaline junkies, eco-tourists, wellness seekers and foodies of all budgets.” “Even the north and east, including areas previously off limits, difficult to reach or lacking in services, deliver new discoveries.”

So what are some of the key factors drawing visitors from near and far? Lonely Planet highlights Sri Lanka’s intriguing cuisine, using different flavors from many of its neighboring countries that infuse explosive tastes. They also shed light on the country’s transportation ways. To give a much-needed break from American’s train systems like New York’s MTA or the Bay Area BART, the route from Kandy to Ella is a dream come true with first class tickets going for the low price of only $6. You just can’t beat that price.

If Sri Lanka isn’t on your bucket list, maybe you can check out some of the other countries that made the cut. Germany, Zimbabwe, Panama, and Kyrgyzstan were on the list and Copenhagen, Denmark was the winner for the top city to visit in 2019.
