Must-Visit Wineries In South Africa

By DeAnna Taylor

Some of the best wines in the world are created right in the Motherland. The Stellenbosch area, right outside of Cape Town, is known for its many wineries.

Check out this list we’ve curated of some of the wineries you can’t miss while in South Africa. Many of them are also Black-owned.

Thandi Wines

This Black-owned winery is currently managed by Vernon Henn. This community-centered winery focuses on uplifting those in the area by providing jobs and opportunities within the vineyard. The tasting room is open Monday through Friday only.

Earthbound Wines

While this isn’t a Black-owned winery, the current winemaker is a Black man. Heinrich Kulsen began his wine career in France before taking on his role at Earthbound Wines. The wines here are produced organically through the entire process. Earthbound Wines can be found at Papkuilsfontein farm outside Darling on the Cape West Coast.

Seven Sisters

Two words, BLACK-OWNED. This Stellenbosch area winery was started in 2005 by the seven Brutus sisters and their younger brother. The family comes from a poor fishing community right outside of Cape Town. Their most popular wines are Chardonnay and Shiraz.

Muratie Wine Estate

This is one of the areas oldest wineries. It is said to be one of the first producers of Pinot Noir. This estate still handpicks all of their grapes to ensure they are producing the best quality wines possible. A standard tasting starts at R45, which is around $3.15 USD. They also offer chocolate pairings and a premium tasting option.

The Rangaka family moved from Johannesburg to Cape Town to begin their wine venture. This Black family winery prides itself on making quality wines. You can also find them in the Stellenbosch area.
