When traveling, safety is always a top priority. While it’s natural to rely on rumors and gossip when it comes to deciding what cities are safe for travel, it’s always best to do your research before choosing your next destination.

In October, Statista released the top 10 list of cities with the largest number of violent crimes per 100,000 residents. The list included statistics from 2018 and took four categories of violent crimes into consideration: murder and non-negligent manslaughter; forcible rape; robbery; and aggravated assault. Only cities with a population of at least 200,000 were considered.

Check out which cities made the list below.

10. Albuquerque, NM

Crimes per 100k residents: 1,364

9. Stockton, CA

Crimes per 100k residents: 1,399

8. Milwaukee, WI

Crimes per 100k residents: 1,412

7. Cleveland, OH

Crimes per 100k residents: 1,449

6. Kansas City, MO

Crimes per 100k residents: 1,590

5. St. Louis, MO

Crimes per 100k residents: 1,800

4. Baltimore, MD

Crimes per 100k residents: 1,833

3. Birmingham, AL

Crimes per 100k residents: 1,911

2. Memphis, TN

Crimes per 100k residents: 1,943

1. Detroit, MI

Crimes per 100k residents: 2,007

As far as the most dangerous state in the country, Alaska surprisingly holds the title. According to statistics, Alaska had a violent crime rate of 885 per 100,000 people in 2018. The national average is only 380.6. Although the state only had 47 murders in 2018, there were 161.6 rapes reported for every 100,000 people, the highest of any state. The most dangerous city in Alaska, according to stats, is Anchorage.
