Here’s Your Guide To Morocco’s Souks, Desert, And More

By Parker Diakite

Morocco is a favorite country among tourists because it’s full of history, culture, adventure, and more.

From the desert, architecture in Fez, and souks, here’s your guide to experiencing what makes Morocco the ultimate vacation trip.

The Classic Morocco Experience

Marrakesh is popular for its architecture and its iconic square: the Djemma el Fna.   It’s a place where you will see the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh.  From snake charmers, acrobats and the souks,  Marrakesh is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.

Be sure to stay in a riad during your stay. A riad is a type of traditional Moroccan house or palace with an interior garden or courtyard.

Our suggestion, because of its signature view, is Dar Hanane.

Located just 150 miles up north of Marrakesh, is Casablanca. It’s different than Marrakesh in the fact that it has a colonial character.

Casablanca is considered the main economic city of Morocco, and many visitors say it feels more modern than Marrakesh.

On your to-do-list, should be a visit to the Hassan II Mosque.  It’s one of the largest mosques in Morocco and the second largest in the world.

You only need a day in Casablanca, which is easily accessible by a train ride for roughly $20.

After your time in Casablanca, head to Fez. It’s one of the most complete medieval cities in the Arab world full of history and tradition.  According to The Times UK,  you can stay at the imperial city of Meknes, not far from the stunning Roman ruins at Volubilis.

First things first, in Fez, head to the Merenid Tombs, the final place of sultans.

Next, head to Dar el Makhzen, the Royal Palace of Fez with stunning views of Moroccan architecture.

If you’re looking for a place in Fez,  try the Dar Arsama. It has a beautiful rooftop with cozy nooks for breakfast.

Sahara Desert

Next, It’s time to explore the desert.

Marrakesh is in close proximity to the Sahara desert so head to the desert on your way back to Marrakesh. Travelers typically make it a multi-day trek via a camel and camp overnight.
