Marilyn Manson Gets A Taste Of Houston’s Black Culture At Astroworld Fest
By Stephanie Ogbogu
Over the weekend, Travis Scott held his second annual Astroworld Festival in his hometown of Houston, Texas. The festival, which has now become the largest single-day artist-curated music festival in the country, featured a ton of special guests, including Migos, Megan Thee Stallion, DaBaby, Kanye West, and Texas legends like Paul Wall and Trae Tha Truth.
What fans of Travis Scott weren’t expecting was a surprise appearance from hard rock icon, Marilyn Manson. The looks on everyone’s faces say it all.
Marilyn Manson had a bit of a culture shock himself. He was slightly taken aback when he witnessed a slab on swangas with pop trunk and hydraulics for the very first time.
What are slabs, swangas, and pop trunk, you ask?
Slabs, swangas, and pop trunks are all a unique part of Houston’s custom car culture, particularly in the African American hip hop community.
Slabs, which is believed to be an acronym for “slow, loud, and bangin” refers to the car, often an older-model classic automobile with a shiny custom paint job, custom sound system, and is decked out in other custom accessories like rims, interior, and more.
Swangas refer to the extravagant cone-shaped rims that you are likely to see on most slabs. They’re also referred to as “elbows” or “bows” due to their shape and how far out they extend.
Pop trunk, another staple in Houston’s custom car culture, refers to the trunk display and neon light show that you will find inside the trunks of many slabs.
Slab culture has been popular in Black Houston and surrounding areas since the mid-80s. The art of showing off these custom cars has become an entire experience within the Black community in Texas. It’s not uncommon to find multiple slabs assembled around popular gatherings, stealing the spotlight and being treated as the main event.
Marilyn Manson was so enthralled by the sight of a slab that he couldn’t help but to get a photo.
Now, that’s something you don’t see every day.
