Madagascar, located on the southeast coast of Africa, is known for its natural beauty and wildlife, but travelers to the country should be aware of a recent travel advisory that’s now in effect for the island nation.

The United States Department of State Bureau of Consular Affairs recently issued a travel advisory for people visiting Madagascar, elevating the advisory level to “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution.” According to the advisory, officials are asking residents to use precautions due to civil unrest and crime as the country prepares for its 2018 presidential elections. Travelers should be prepared for demonstrations and political rallies.

In addition to the demonstrations, officials warn of an increase in violent crimes such as armed robbery, assaults near Antananarivo, Tolagnaro, Batterie Beach and Toliara.

Those considering traveling to Madagascar should be aware of their surroundings, avoid demonstrations, and consider enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive alerts, which will make it easier to locate travelers during an emergency.

For more information on this travel advisory, visit the U.S. Department of State’s website.
