Live Your Best Food Life: 626 Night Market

By Jeffery Smith, Jr.

Santa Anita Park in the Arcadia neighborhood of San Gabriel Valley, just northeast of Los Angeles, has hosted the popular 626 Night Market event over the summer, through Labor Day, since its inception in 2012.

We’re here to talk about some of the best food on the grounds that you should be sure to check out.

Thai-Mex Cocina

The 1st and the original Thai Mexican fusion food truck in Los Angeles is how Thai-Mex Cocina is branding themselves.  With some of the best Thai favorites and flavors wrapped in a corn shell tortilla, how could you go wrong? Some fan favorites are the crispy pork tacos and the chicken satay tacos.  Oh, and do not skip the peanut sauce on the chicken satay tacos. In case you do not want the whole fusion sha-bang Thai-Mex does offer traditional Thai favorites like pad thai and you can get traditional Mexican burritos and tacos, but let’s be real, we’re all going for the fusion!

Okamoto Kitchen

Japanese style comfort food is what the Okamoto Kitchen truck is serving up to customers. Okamoto wants to introduce people to authentic, lesser-known Japanese dishes.  They are known for their creation the Nom Bomb Sandwich (sweet and sour teriyaki-glazed, deep-fried chicken or tofu with shredded cabbage, tartar sauce and jalapeno on a brioche bun) and Okonomi Fries ( thin crispy shoestring fries topped Okonomiyaki style – Okonomi sauce, Kewpie mayo, aonori, green onions, red ginger and bonito flakes).

Liam’s Lemonade

This is just childhood joy at its best.  Liam’s is serving some of the best fresh squeezed lemonade, regular and flavored, and roasted corn.  Sounds basic right, well wait until you get your hands on their creation the Uni-corn, which is a roasted and finished rainbow colored elote.  Another great thing about Liam’s is every purchase you make supports children and families who have lost a parent or loved one to illnesses and unforeseen tragedies.

Krabby Krab House

Bacon wrapped shrimp, deep fried oysters, a softshell crab burger and more are what you can expect from this seafood stand.  Krabby Krab House does wonders on the bun adding the fried soft shell crab. A great crunch with a cool and creamy sauce to add a little zest is what the line here is all about.  While you can add fries to this I suggest going all out and adding the crab fries, which are topped with snow crab meat.

Baked Dessert Bar

After eating all of those savory dishes at the 626 Night Market you have to finish off on a sweet note and here is just the place to satisfy that craving.  Filipino inspired flavors of gourmet cupcakes, custom cakes, cheesecakes, macarons, and other desserts are what make Baked Dessert Bar a great dessert choice.  As an avid and outspoken cheesecake lover, this is the side of the menu I recommend venturing on, at least first. The red velvet cheesecake and the mango calamansi cheesecake are the perfect finish for any meal.

There still time to check this awesome event out, the last dates for the 2018 season runs from August 31 – September 2, 2018.
