Reminder: It’s Illegal To Get Naked At The Egyptian Pyramids

By Sharelle Burt

Authorities in Egypt have arrested a camel driver and another woman for assisting two Danish visitors in taking a video and pictures in the nude at the Egyptian pyramids. With the entire country outraged, the interior ministry reported that the woman put the duo in contact with the driver, who took them to the historic site illegally after they paid him 4,000 Egyptian pounds.

The two have acknowledged their role in helping the couple pull off the stunt, and will be put on trial at a later date.

Posted on YouTube earlier this month, the video titled “Climbing the Great Pyramid of Giza” shows photographer Andreas Hvid scaling the 4,500-year-old tomb with a woman who later took off her top. With the video only being three minutes long, it received close to 4.5 million views on YouTube. It also caused a public outcry in Egypt. Hvid told a Danish newspaper that he had “dreamed for many years of climbing the Great Pyramid” and taking a naked picture. The country and other supporters are not pleased. “A 7,000-year-old civilization has turned into a bed sheet,” one Egyptian Twitter user said.

Hvid said he didn’t mean to cause any harm and that the woman with him isn’t his girlfriend. “It was just a pose. We did not have sexual relations,” the 23-year-old said. Egypt’s public prosecutor is investigating the video. Nudity is Egypt is highly forbidden, as well as climbing pyramids. Back in 2016, one German tourist was banned for life after posting footage online of him climbing one of the ancient structures.

Attempting to climb the wonders is incredibly brave since the Great Pyramid stands at 480 feet tall.
