The world went into a collective frenzy when former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama turned a business trip in Italy into a five-star European vacation last spring. From Milan to Tuscany, the Obamas savored the best Italy has to offer, while the rest of us sat back and waited to see where the duo would jet off to next.

Barack kicked off the Italian adventure with business, speaking at the Seeds & Chips Global Food Innovation Summit in Milan. During the summit, which was one of Barack’s first major appearances after leaving office, the former president was seen leaving the Park Hyatt Milan which has a newly renovated Presidential Suite.
While in Milan, Barack paid a visit to the Santa Maria delle Grazie to see Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper” painting up close.
The Obamas made their way to Tuscany to stay at the lavish Borgo Finocchieto estate, where Michelle was seen hiking it the city of Siena. On their first day in Tuscany, Michelle turned heads as she toured the hilltop town of Montalcino and grabbed gelato at Gelateria Artigianale while Barack hit the links at Castiglion del Bosco Golf Club, Italy’s only private golf club within a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
No trip to Italy is complete without a stellar meal, and the Obamas dined with Italy’s finest. Massimo Bottura the chef and owner of the three-Michelin-starred restaurant Osteria Francescana, one the best restaurants in the world based in Modena, Italy, treated the Obamas to a world-class dinner at the Gravner Winery according to Travel + Leisure. Chef Bottura even took to Instagram to share his excitement over hosting the couple.

My last 48 hours: Mr @allanjenkins21 tells us that we are on the cover of @obsfood @guardian, in the meantime we are preparing for @michelleobama and @barackobama. We left Lara playing 'Boccie' at midnight in Tuscany for la Croisette @festivaldecannes for a very important lunch : JUST HARD WORK
Sure the Obama’s luxurious Italian vacation is one that most people can only dream about, but use their itinerary as a guide to help you plan your own unique European adventure. Who knows, you just might run into Barack and Michelle while grabbing a scoop of gelato.
