Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands, is known for its artistic heritage, its fantastic canal system, and its narrow houses. It is also known as a world-class transportation hub, and there are several ways to get into and around the city.

If you are planning to visit Amsterdam, there is no need to worry about renting a car. The city is home to a top-notch public transportation system. Their network offers metros, buses, trams, ferries, and trains to help you get around the city.

Ferries

The Amsterdam ferries provide free rides to pedestrians, cyclists, and mopeds across the IJ river. Most ferries can be found behind Amsterdam Central Station. The most popular route is Amsterdam Central Station to Buiksloterweg which takes passengers close to many popular attractions.

Metros

Running four routes, the metro system is the fastest way to get to areas like Bijlmer, Amstelveen and Diemen. You can access the metros with a public transport chip card, by purchasing a one-hour ticket, or by using any other recognized travel card.

Trams

Very similar to the metros, the tram system is one of the quickest and most popular ways to get around the city center. The tram accepts the same types of tickets and cards as the metro in addition to a 24 and 48-hour ticket option.

The best option, according to I amsterdam, is to purchase the I Amsterdam City card to save some money during your visit. The card offers a 24, 48, 72, or 96-hour option. It also allows users to gain free entrance to over 60 museums and attractions, a free 1-hour canal cruise ride, and unlimited access to all of Amsterdam’s public transport system (GVB). That includes metros, trams, and bus lines that run throughout the city.

Pricing for the card is as follows:

  • 24-hour card with transportation included = 59 Euros or roughly $68.86.
  • 48-hour card with transportation included = 74 Euros or roughly $86.37.
  • 72-hour card with no transportation included = 69 Euros or roughly $80.53.
  • 72-hour card with transportation included = 84 Euros or roughly $98.04.
  • 96-hour card with transportation included = 98 Euros or roughly $114.38.
