Flights Between NYC And Paris Are Super Expensive, Here’s Why

Paris is the fashionable city known for its romance, art and of course — croissants.

Getting there, however, can be quite expensive — especially when traveling from NYC.

Roundtrip tickets can cost between $300 and $1,200. There are frequent flights daily between these two cities which can raise the question: why are flights from NYC to Paris so expensive?

Travel experts shared their insights on this topic and established the reasons why it can be costly to travel between these two stylish cities.

Paris Is A Hot Spot

Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare says supply and demand is the reason for the high cost. According to CN Traveler, France is the most visited country in the world.

Seaney reveals: “In the month of July 2018, there were 1,829 nonstop flights from the U.S. to Paris”.

Of those flights, a quarter comes from New York.

Major airlines don’t feel the need to lower prices because of the high demand to fly to Paris.

Flight Operations Is Costly

It costs a lot of money to travel to Paris considering the trip spans thousands of miles.

“The other item that dictates the price of a flight is oil prices. At $50 or $60 a barrel, fuel surcharges typically are $200 to $350 of that ticket price,” explains Seaney.

He goes on to explain: “The taxes and fees for an international trip are typically around $100”.

This means the flight cost could reach up to $400 before the airline makes a profit.

Business Travelers Are Willing To Pay The High Prices

Paris is one of Europe’s most thriving business centers. Many people flying from NYC to Paris are actually traveling for work.

“When you have flights with a lot of frequency, they’re not geared toward leisure travelers — those spots are being paid for mostly by business travelers,” shares Matthew Ma, co-founder of The Flight Deal.

How To Get A Good Deal:

  • Keep a constant lookout for flight deals
  • Set alerts for desired dates on Google Flights or Kayak
  • Winter is the cheapest time to travel
  • Book in advance
