Move over Lisbon, Portugal’s second largest city has been making quite the buzz this past year.

Located on the Douro River, Porto is becoming known for more than its famed Port Wine.

One reason for its growing popularity is the city’s prices. Portugal tends to be a cheaper destination for those looking for a budget-friendly vacation in Europe and Porto is one of the cheapest cities in Portugal.

Even with the increase in tourism, hotels, bed and breakfast accommodations, and hostels can be found for a decent price.

Of course, you can’t visit Portugal without tasting the country’s wine, which is popular due to its unique soil, but don’t forget to indulge in Porto’s food scene.

The Francesinha is one of the most popular food items to try in Porto. The sandwich is made with bread, ham, sausages, steak and typically covered with melted cheese and an egg on top.

What makes it truly unique is the secret sauce, which is comprised of a hot thick tomato and beer sauce to dip your sandwich in.

Aside from food and wine, Porto is a beautiful city with a great deal of charm. One of the best things to do is to sit along Porto’s beaches and watch the sunset. The best part is that it’s free.

From Boston:

Skyscanner has a deal on British Airways from Boston starting in late October through March 2020 for as low as $244 round-trip.

The flight departing Boston on Oct. 30 through Nov. 6 has one layover in Madrid.

From New York:

Flights from New York City are starting at $279 round-trip this December, according to Skyscanner. Like the flights departing Boston, there are a ton of deals for under $300 from October through March of 2020.
