You Now Have To Pay To Check A Bag On Delta’s International Flights

The days of checking your first bag for free when flying international to Europe of beyond is now a thing of the past, at least if you’re flying Delta’s basic economy fare and wich to check a bag.

Delta Airlines has begun to charge international fliers that opted for basic economy fares $60 for their first checked bag that weighs under 50lbs and $100 for the second checked bag. The new fee applies to any basic economy ticket that was purchased on or after December 6 for travel on or after April 10. The move comes as major airlines compete with low-cost carriers for budget-minded travelers and as travelers continue to choose to fly basic economy over regular economy when given the choice.

Airlines have been charging customers for checked bags on domestic flights for a decade, and low-cost carriers like WOW and Norwegian already make up for their low fares by charging to check bags for their international flights.

While airlines like American and United, which both offer their own version of basic economy fares, have yet to announce plans to charge budget passengers for their first bag, it will likely only be a matter of time. When it comes to fees, all airlines tend to follow the money
