Wildfires Cause Flight Delays And Cancellations At San Francisco Airport

Northern California’s recent wildfires have destroyed thousands of homes and structures, leaving many homeless and stranded. CNN called it “the most destructive blaze” in California’s history, spreading across 10,000 acres within the first six hours on Friday.

Now, these wildfires have affected more than its residents.

Smoke from the fires has interrupted air traffic and flights at San Francisco’s International Airport, causing delays and at least 19 flight cancellations. The airport issued an alert via Twitter explaining the impact.

Butte County wildfires are impacting some flights at SFO. The devastating wildfires are causing unhealthy air quality conditions, reduced visibility, and widespread smoke and haze. SFO is experiencing some delays and cancellations. Please check with your airline for flight details,” the tweet read.

Over 50,000 residents have evacuated from Butte County, not counting several other neighboring counties. According to The Mercury News, the smoke caused a thick haze, making it difficult to breathe and see. To reduce the smell of the smoke, AC units in the airport have been set to “recirculate.” The wildfires have now spread across over 200,000 acres and killed at least 20 people.

Officials predicted the smoke would last through at least Monday. Smoke was reportedly seen from the nearby LAX airport.

Airlines like United and American have issued waivers through November 18th. Travel plans must be rescheduled in the same fare class and between the same originally ticketed cities. Alaska Airlines are issuing waivers on a case-by-case basis, according to The Points Guy.

Contact your airline for flight changes, delays or cancellations.
