Body Found In Costa Rica Near Missing Florida Woman’s Airbnb
By Sharelle Burt
A body has been found near the Airbnb property in Costa Rica where a missing Florida woman was staying.
Investigators say tracker dogs discovered the body in plastic bags, but authorities cannot confirm the body’s identity as of yet. The brother of Carla Stefaniak went to Costa Rica to search for his sister and said he wasn’t coming back until he found her.
Authorities say Stefaniak went to the Caribbean island from Miami to celebrate her birthday. She was supposed to come back on November 28, but never boarded her flight. April Burton, her sister-in-law, was the last person to hear from Carla after she sent a text complaining about the weather and mentioning that the area seemed unsafe. “It’s pretty sketchy here,” Stefaniak said.
The 36-year-old was staying at an Airbnb with Burton. The owners told Stefaniak’s family that security guards saw her get into a car around 5 am that morning with her luggage, which was odd because Stefaniak had already arranged a pick up at 8:30 am. The family has also been in contact with the Uber driver who picked her up. Burton is in fear that she may have trusted the wrong person and have been kidnapped. “She was just such a happy go lucky person,” Burton said. “I’m just afraid she was just too trusting with someone there. Burton was the last person to see her after dropping her off at the airport.
The family has set up a GoFundMe page has been opened in efforts to find her and a missing person report has been filed by both the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica as well as the FBI. Devastated by the news, Burton expressed her concern on Facebook. “Words cannot express how shocking and devastating this is to her family and her friends,” Burton wrote. “If anyone can help us with this situation, it will be highly appreciated.”
