Black Travelers Share Their Most Inspiring Travel Moments
By Shontel Horne
One of the best things about travel is that it is filled with inspiring moments that can stay with you for a lifetime. We asked some of our favorite travel influencers to share the travel moments that have inspired them the most and their answers will make you want to head to the airport immediately!
Oneika: There are too many to name! I was very moved by my visit to the Apartheid Museum in Johannesburg, South Africa. Learning more about the history of apartheid reminded me of the strength and tenacity of black people; this realization was inspiring and soul-shifting. On another note, doing a bungee jump over the Zambezi River was affirming as well. I’m deathly afraid of heights!
James: I think it was the time I got to ride elephants in Thailand. Never in my life have I come so close to an animal of such strength, toughness and beauty. You only see things like that in the zoo or circus around here.
Gloria: I was camping near Petra, Jordan in a Bedouin camp, surrounded by strangers-turned-friends, and the Bedouin boys played music around the campfire as we all started dancing to the beat in a circle. There was no wifi, there was hardly any light, and there was definitely no other civilization for miles as we were in the middle of the desert. With wine flowing through our blood and a million stars accessorizing the sky, we shared stories, laughs, and tears, and it was one of the most magical and inspiring moments of my life. Life, when stripped down to the basics, is beautiful. Sometimes all we need is good company, good music, and good wine.
