This Black-Owned Candle Company Promises To Inspire Wanderlust

It’s no surprise that familiar scents can spark nostalgia. Whether it’s the comforting smell of a loved one or a smell that takes us back to a time and place from our past, the power of smell is undeniable.  This black business owner decided to take it one step further by creating scents that inspire future travel and a longing to explore places around the world.

In 2010, Danielle Greene graduated from Temple University and decided to use this time of unemployment to travel and pursue her hobby of candle making. A short time later, she founded Passport Seven Home Décor & Candle Co., a company that provides handmade, high-quality candles and home accessories using all-natural, non-toxic compositions, quality wicks, unique fragrances, and exceptional packaging.

I chatted with Danielle to learn a bit more about her passion for travel and her inspiration to create a successful brand that fills the air with wanderlust.

What was the inspiration for the overall concept of Passport Seven?

My inspiration for the overall concept was creating products that evoked emotion, the desire to travel, explore and evolve. Our products inspire “wanderlust and modish living’ via sustainable, handmade quality products. Our brand can be described as an abstract view of the world shaped by travelers in motion. So, no matter where you are in life mentally, physically, or emotionally, you can evolve in your space. We also believe our products provide you with a travel experience without leaving your home.

How has travel impacted your life?

Growing up in the inner city, I wasn’t really exposed to life outside of Baltimore city and county lines. I always felt the urge to explore and travel abroad. Although nervous, I took my first international trip to Africa by myself. That trip turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life. I was able to meet people from different walks of life. My self-confidence grew and my life was forever changed. My love for travel birthed a business. As a black woman, single mother, and business owner, I owe it to myself and my child to expose him to the world around me.  I hope when people purchase my products, they think about the world around them and are encouraged to step outside of their comfort zone.

Can scent really inspire wanderlust? And how do you capture the essence or scent of a place?

Scents can absolutely inspire wanderlust! I always tell my customers that scents and smells are subjective. One person may believe a scent evokes one emotion and another person can smell that same scent and feel it evoked a totally different emotion. I love when my “travelers” smell our destinations and say “oh, this reminds me of Paris” or “I want to visit The Great Wall of China.” A lot of the destinations for my candles I have traveled to and/or have done significant research on. When I create a destination (scent), it often evokes nostalgia from my time abroad.
