Zara Oparaugo is a 22-year-old Nigerian-American transforming the way African millennials network through her brand LA African. Two years ago, she developed this platform that offers an array of opportunities for entrepreneurs and creatives to engage with like-minded individuals across the world and take their careers to the next level.

When she is not working on her brand, she is advocating and facilitating necessary dialogues for minorities pursuing STEM and STEM-adjacent careers. Zara will also begin medical school in the fall. We spoke with her via email about what’s going on with LA African.

TN: What cool events/things are you doing at LA African?

Zara: The easier question to answer would be, what cool things are we NOT working on? There are a ton of exciting things in the works for 2019. We can’t wait to watch everything unfold.

In addition to hosting networking events and our annual AfroPalooza project, we are currently running a campaign called, #NEXTUP. #NEXTUP is an initiative that highlights the voices of community leaders from across the world! To date, this tour has led us to sit down with phenomenal individuals in Los Angeles, London, and South Africa. The series documents the stories behind the next generation of African entrepreneurs, professionals, and creatives. Stay tuned to see if we touch down in your city.

TN: Tell us about Afropalooza.

Zara: On June 2nd, 2018 we hosted our first annual AfroPalooza experience. This event was a major milestone for our company that marked our first anniversary and set the tone for what to expect from us in the years to come.

With special guest appearances from celebrities such as, Jidenna and Dr. Nita-Landry, attendees had the opportunity to meet inspirational figures and hear all about their journey. The fun-filled evening kicked off with a meet & greet that transitioned into a panel. Our panelists shared details about “their most embarrassing moment” and the formative experiences that led them to become who they are today. We ended the night with performances and a black business vendor marketplace that showcased local talent and supported small black business owners. We can’t wait to see you at #AfroPalooza2019.
