Across the continent, the street food found in Africa is some of the best in the world. From flavor, nutrition, and low cost,  trying street foods is one of the best ways to experience the culture and the people of the country.

If you’re planning a trip to the continent soon, here’s a list of some foods that you absolutely must try.

Suya In Nigeria

Suya is the ultimate street snack in Nigeria. Suya is a spicy meat skewer, including strips of beef, chicken, fish, that are marinated in ground peanuts, paprika, onion powder, and ginger.  The meat is then charred over a flaming grill.

Sfenj In Morocco

Everyone loves a doughnut! Sfenj is a light and fluffy treat that’s created using very basic ingredients: water, flour, sugar, and salt. They’re then cooked in hot oil until crispy on the outside.

You can eat them plain, sugar-coated, or drenched in honey.

Kelewele In Ghana

Kelewele is a snack found in Ghana that is made up of fried plantains seasoned with cayenne peppers, salt, and ginger. The plantains will melt in your mouth as they are served once they’re golden brown while crunchy on the outside and soft and juicy on the inside.

Chapati With Egg and Cheese In Kenya

Take comfort food to a whole different level by trying Chapati with cheese, egg, spicy meat.

This stuffed pancake, also known as a “keema chappati,” is even better delicious when you dip it in a yogurt sauce.

Poulet Yassa In Senegal

There are so many options for Street Food in Senegal. From Accara, Fataya, or Dibi, you can’t go wrong.

But Poulet Yassa is a Senegalese classic. 

Originating from the Casamance region in the south of the country, Poulet Yassa is a tender chicken dish that is marinated in a thick, lemon and onion sauce and then cooked over a charcoal fire. Served with rice,  couscous, or plantains,  this dish will have you coming back to Senegal for more. 

Mofo Gasy In Madagascar

Mofo Gasy is a sweet Malagasy breakfast bread made of rice flour, sweetened condensed milk, yeast and vanilla that’s cooked slowly over a charcoal grill.
