Over a dozen people have been potentially exposed to Hepatitis A on a recent flight say health officials in North Carolina.

On October 1st, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was notified that a flight attendant had contracted the disease.

The CDC wrote in a statement saying, “Because the flight attendant had diarrhea on several flights within the infectious period, contact investigations were done to notify passengers.”

They went on to say, “The airline is notifying other crew staffing those flights.”

According to the Mecklenburg County Health Department, 18 Charlotte-area passengers who were on the American Airlines flight on September 21st from San Francisco to Charlotte have been contacted.

Rebecca Carter, spokeswoman for the health department, says the passengers have received vaccinations since being contacted.

Hepatitis A is a disease that affects the liver and is contracted due to the contamination of food and water. The effects can range from the illness lasting a few weeks to more severe cases lasting for months.

When explaining the effects ofHepatitis A, the CDC says, “Although rare, hepatitis A can cause death in some people. Hepatitis A usually spreads when a person unknowingly ingests the virus from objects, food, or drinks contaminated by small, undetected amounts of stool from an infected person.”

American Airlines has since released a statement saying they are in close communication with the CDC and “public health officials will coordinate with the airline on any required health and safety-related measures.”
