Airbnb Providing Free Housing To Those Displaced By Hurricane Dorian

Hurricane Dorian ripped its way through the Bahamas over the weekend and is said to be one of the strongest storms to date. Sadly, we’ve seen the horrific damage that the storm has caused throughout The Bahamas, mostly around Freeport.

The category 5 storm even claimed the life of an 8-year old boy.

The storm is said to make its way to Florida and the coast of the Carolinas next. It is said to have weakened and is now being classified as a category 4. Unfortunately, with a storm of this magnitude, hundreds of people will need to evacuate their homes, especially with certain areas of Florida being under mandatory evacuations.

Airbnb is stepping in to provide some temporary relief to those displaced. In 2012, they launched the “Open Homes Program,” which provides free housing to displaced residents and disaster relief workers impacted by natural disasters. The program was initially launched for those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

They recently added more housing options on the site in the wake of Hurricane Dorian. The program is available through Sept. 16. There are more than 800 listings open that span across Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Alabama.

“Airbnb’s Open Homes Program continues to be activated for those affected by Hurricane Dorian across the southeast U.S. region,” said Kellie Bentz, Airbnb’s head of global disaster response and relief. “We encourage hosts to open up their homes, and those who need housing to take advantage of the program.”

You can find more information on Airbnb’s website as to the process of signing up for free temporary housing. In addition to providing housing for disaster relief, Open Homes is also open to those seeking temporary housing as a refugee or those who need a home as they go through medical recovery.
