By Leah Freeman-Haskin
It’s common for the Caribbean and the Mediterranean to get all of the attention when it comes to idyllic, destination beaches, but the Indian Ocean and surrounding seas of Africa’s remarkable coast, have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Do yourself a favor and start tightening those summer travel budgets so you can experience these African paradises for yourself.
In Bazaruto, palm trees dangle into the turquoise water like an image from a postcard. The idyllic tropical island beaches seem to stretch along the coastline forever. The area is also known for its impressive diving scene that offers a glimpse into the colorful, frenzied underwater world of the Indian Ocean.
Diani Beach, Kenya
Diani Beach is one of Kenya’s most popular beaches. Until recently, the area has been a well-kept secret among international vacationers who have flocked to the coast since the 1970s. Today, the area is full of luxury hotels, pristine beaches, and a trendy restaurant and bar scene that continues to grow each season.
Nungwi, Zanzibar, Tanzania
The island of Zanzibar is full of breathtaking beaches. Located on the north side of the island, Nungwi was once a simple fishing village and has grown in recent years into a popular vacation destination. Head to the beach at sunset and be sure to grab your camera to catch the stunning scene of the sun floating over the horizon and the sea dotted with dhows, a type of ship typical in the region.
Anse Soleil, Mahe, Seychelles
Where the jungle meets the sea, Anse Soleil is a peaceful, quiet beach located in the southwest of Mahe where the scenery will take your breath away. Swimmers should be careful, as the water can be quite deep here, especially at high tide, and there is a deep drop-off not far from the shore.
Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

From crystal, blue waters to unforgettable diving in the Red Sea, you can find wide stretches of beaches along the coast that fulfill the needs of adventure seekers and those needing relaxation under the African sun.
