Plant-based diets have been exploding in popularity and even destinations that are famous for their BBQ and meats are starting to follow this trend. Check out our list of the best vegan and vegetarian spots across America, including plenty of Black-owned restaurants to support:

Alabama – Ghion Hall 

While you won’t find many vegan- or vegetarian-only options in Alabama, Ghion Hall is the state’s first Ethiopian Restaurant and has an assortment of vegan as well as meat options. You can find it in Birmingham’s Pizitz Food Hall.

Alaska – Middle Way Cafe 

Famous for its fishing and hunting opportunities, it can be difficult to keep a vegan or vegetarian diet in Alaska. Located in Anchorage, Middle Way Cafe offers a wide range of organic and locally-sourced vegan options.

Arizona – The Larder and the Delta

This Black-owned eatery has a variety of Southern-inspired dishes with an emphasis on local produce. Hoppin John and Carolina Gold rice fritters are just two of the delicious vegetarian options available. 

Arkansas – Blue Sage Vegan 

Located on President Bill Clinton Ave in Little Rock, Arkansas, Blue Sage Vegan is one of the city’s only 100% vegan restaurants, serving up Southern comfort food with a twist. 

California – Stuff I Eat

This Black-owned restaurant is an Inglewood staple that serves strictly vegan cuisine. The menu finds inspiration from Tex-Mex with standout items like their organic soul food platter and enchilada pie. 


Colorado – Santana’s Vegan Grill

If you’re in a hurry, head to the drive-thru at Santana’s Vegan Grill, where you can score fast food favorites that won’t break your vegan diet. 

Connecticut – Fire & Spice Vegan Restaurant 

Connecticut’s Fire & Spice Vegan Restaurant takes inspiration from Indian cuisine with items like red lentil dahl and chole gracing their generous menu.

Delaware – Roots Natural Kitchen 

With locations in Delaware, Pennsylvania, and Virginia, vegans can’t get enough of Roots Natural Kitchen, which allows customers to make their own salad and grain bowls in a fast-casual environment. 

Florida – The New Vegan

Spearheaded by “the next generation of vegans,” The New Vegan in Delray Beach specializes in allergen-free fare that’s packed with macro-nutrients. Their falafel burger is a favorite among locals.

Georgia – Slutty Vegan

This Black-owned vegan burger joint makes being vegan almost feel sinful. It’s one of Atlanta’s newest hotspots with both a store location and a mobile food truck. Recently, Slutty Vegan founder Pinky Cole gave back to the community in a major way. Not only did she pay off the balances of 30 Clark Atlanta University seniors, helping them get a clean slate before graduating, she also helped one junior stay in school by making a life-changing donation to her GoFundMe.

Hawaii – The Beet Box Cafe 

Located on the island of Oahu in the Haleiwa neighborhood, The Beet Box Cafe serves up vegan breakfast all day long in a colorful atmosphere.

Idaho – High Note Cafe

High Note Cafe shifted to a completely vegan menu earlier this year, but the quality of their dishes remains just as good. Stay warm with a helping of their hearty vegan tomato basil coconut soup.

Illinois – MoonMeals

This Black-owned plant based meal service doesn’t have a brick-and-mortar location (yet), but you can find their delicious meals at a number of grab-and-go locations throughout Chicago.

Indiana – SoBro Cafe 

Located in Indianapolis, SoBro Cafe is a Black-owned restaurant with healthy vegetarian options. Their cuisine is internationally inspired and almost all of their food is made from scratch. 

Iowa – Trumpet Blossom Cafe 

This organic, vegan-only restaurant opened its doors in Iowa City in 2012 and features a full bar. They also host concerts and other events.

Kansas – Happy Apple Cafe 

Located in Kansas City, Happy Apple Cafe is a casual vegan restaurant that features a rotating seasonal menu with locally sourced ingredients. It’s one of the only vegan-only cafes you’ll find in the state.

Kentucky – Heart and Soy

If you’re in the mood for Asian food without meat, stop by Heart and Soy to satisfy your craving. Located in Louisville, this cozy spot is famous for their homemade tofu. 

Louisiana – Sweet Soulfood

Sweet Soulfood delivers authentic Southern cuisine with a vegan flare, offering dishes like chicken-fried cauliflower and okra gumbo. Located in New Orleans, this Black-owned restaurant has a rotating menu for every day of the week.

Maine – Chase’s Daily

You can find family-owned Chase’s Daily in the quaint town of Belfast, where owners and their children have been farming the land for over 50 years. They offer counter service that includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and soft-serve ice cream. 

Maryland – Deelish by Deedi 

It can be difficult to satisfy your sweet tooth on a vegan diet, but Baltimore-based Black-owned bakery Deelish by Deedi sets to solve that problem with decadent desserts that are “uncompromisingly tasty.” 

Massachusetts – Belmont Vegetarian Restaurant

Despite the name, Belmont Vegetarian is actually a vegan restaurant. You can find this Black-owned spot in Worchester, where they serve vegan food with a soulful, Caribbean twist. 

Michigan – Detroit Vegan Soul

Deemed “the shining rising star in the vegan world” by CNN, Detroit Vegan Soul is a Black-owned restaurant with two locations in the Detroit area. They offer creative spins on typical meat dishes, like their seitan pepper steak and catfish tofu. 

Minnesota – The Herbivorous Butcher

Spearheaded by a brother-sister duo, The Herbivorous Butcher boasts delicious meat-free meat and cheese substitutes that are inspired by their Guamanian background. They offer everything from chorizo to almond-based ricotta cheese and Korean BBQ ribs at their Minneapolis location.

Mississippi – Magic Vegan Cafe 

You can find Magic Vegan Cafe in the Gulf Coast-adjacent town of Gulfport, where they proudly serve Southern-style vegan cuisine. 

Missouri – VegNation

Located in St. Louis, this Black-owned restaurant has more than 40 meat-free dishes to choose from. Customer favorites include the spicy falafel tray and Thai vegetarian fried rice. 

Montana – Red Tractor Pizza

Pizza is one of those dishes that can be difficult to replicate to satisfaction with plant-based ingredients. Bozeman’s Red Tractor Pizza is confident they’re up to the task with brick ovens to bake their seasonal and organic pies. 

Nebraska – Three Happiness Express

Located in Omaha, Three Happiness Express offers traditional Chinese cuisine with vegan and vegetarian options. Their crispy fried tofu is a fan-favorite. 

Nevada – The Modern Vegan

If you need a break from Vegas’ world-famous buffets, The Modern Vegan offers a large menu of creative vegan dishes alongside a full bar. 

New Hampshire – Country Life Vegetarian Restaurant 

Country Life Vegetarian Restaurant believes that you can ditch the meat without abandoning your country roots. This cafeteria-style restaurant has a rotating menu with vegetarian entrees and soups. 

New Jersey – Blueberry Café Juicebar & Vegan Grille

Located in Neward, this Black-owned cafe has a juice bar as well as a restaurant to fit every customer’s needs. They’ve developed a menu that adheres to a Dr. Sebi-recommended diet. 

New Mexico – El Gamal

Located in Taos, El Gamal is a small, casual restaurant serving Meditteranean and Middle Eastern vegetarian food. They also host weekly events including an open mic night. 

New York – Seasoned Vegan 

This Black-owned restaurant is operated by a mother and son team in Harlem. Seasoned Vegan promises flavorful, plant-based food with popular menu items such as their Lemon Crusted “Chicken” Nuggets. 

North Carolina – The Fiction Kitchen 

Housed in Raleigh, The Fiction Kitchen features a vegetarian menu that takes inspiration from around the world. Stop by their brightly colored outpost for dinner Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday for brunch. 

North Dakota – HuHot Mongolian Grill

This chain restaurant is one of the best places to grab a vegan meal in Fargo. You’re sure to be satisfied after consuming one of their all-you-can-eat, customizable stir fry dishes.

Ohio – Tommy’s 

Founded in 1972, Tommy’s is a Cleveland institution that was once voted “Best Milkshake East of the Mississippi” by Rolling Stone magazine. They have plenty of meat, vegetarian, and vegan options to fit your dietary needs.

Oklahoma – The Loaded Bowl 

Located in Oklahoma City, The Loaded Bowl is a trendy restuarant that serves vegetarian and vegan bowls alongside a full bar. They’ve dubbed their cuisine as “conscious comfort food.”

Oregon – Bete-Lukas

If you’re craving Ethiopian, it doesn’t get much better than Portland’s Bete-Lukas, which has plenty of vegetarian options. They also serve Ethiopian beer and honey wine. 

Pennsylvania – The Nile Cafe

Located in the heart of Germantown, this Black-owned Philadelphia restaurant serves vegan soul food and baked goods, as well as purified water.

Rhode Island – Veggie Fun

Based in Providence, Veggie Fun describes their food as “Pan-Asian Vegan Kosher,” with popular dishes like their spicy king oyster mushrooms and curry samosas. 

South Carolina – Rawtopian Bliss

Curious about the raw food craze? Black-owned Rawtopian Bliss is a great option for anyone who wants to try creative raw vegan food. Customers are recommended to place orders in advance at this lowkey spot in Columbia. 

South Dakota – Pacific Rim Cafe 

Found in Rapid City, Pacific Rim Cafe is perfect if you’ve got a craving for Vietnamese, but want to avoid meat in your broth. They offer both vegetarian and gluten-free pho. 

Tennessee – The Southern V 

This Nashville-based restaurant serves up 100% plant-based, Southern-style food. Try their cruelty-free version of Nashville’s hot chick’n.

Texas – Green Seed Vegan

This Black-owned Houston eatery invites customers to #takeaveggiebreak with immune-boosting smoothies, cold-pressed juices, raw foods, and other delicious dishes. 

Utah – Vertical Diner

A favorite among both plant-based and omnivorous eaters, Salt Lake City’s Vertical Diner serves up organic vegan pub grub alongside local craft beer. 

Vermont – Zabby & Elf’s Stone Soup

Located in Burlington, Zabby’s & Elf’s is a cafeteria-style restaurant with a rotating menu that places emphasis on vegetarian Jewish cuisine. 

Virginia – NuVegan Cafe

While not technically in Virginia, this Black-owned restaurant is worth the trip to Washington, D.C. Their Southern-inspired dishes often attract celebrity clientele like Smokey Robinson and Common. 

Washington – Plum Bistro

This Black-owned Seattle bistro hopes to make plant-based eating accessible to everyone. Chef Makini Howell was named in New York Times as one of the top chefs changing food in America. 

West Virginia – Bluegrass Kitchen 

Located in Charleston, Bluegrass Kitchen has a classic diner feel with an updated menu that vegetarians can enjoy. This farm-to-table restaurant also hosts live music and has a full bar. 

Wisconsin – Bombay Sweets

This fast-casual spot in Milwaukee features an all-vegetarian menu with your favorite Indian dishes, snacks, and sweets.

Wyoming – Sweet Melissa 

This small shop in Laramie serves meatless and gluten-free grub alongside organic beers.
