Some would say that biscuits are a necessary side for breakfast, dinner, and especially during the holidays. You can have them topped with butter, jelly, bacon or other toppings, as long as they’re fluffed to perfection. Biscuits sometimes make better sandwiches than regular bread. These days chefs and restaurants all over the country are adding their own unique flavors and twist to America’s favorite side turned entree.

If you are one of the many Americans that has a deep love for this side, here are the best fluffy, buttery biscuits in each state. 

Alabama

Located in Birmingham, Woodlawn Cycle Café‘s Toastie Special, featuring a homemade sweet potato biscuit, fried egg, and pickled mustard seeds, takes traditional breakfast biscuits to new heights. Keep in mind Woodlawn Cycle Café is only open Wednesday-Sunday for breakfast and lunch. 

Alaska 

Alaskans rave about Snow City Cafe and their fluffy homemade biscuits. They were voted the best breakfast in Anchorage. Catering to a healthy community, their menu offers a variety of vegan & gluten-free options. 

Arizona

The biscuits at Breakfast Club in Phoenix come highly recommended, especially when paired with their house hot sauce. Unlike traditional biscuits and gravy meals, the jalapeno cheddar biscuit is covered in fontina cheese and sage-fennel sausage gravy. 

Arkansas

At the Buttered Biscuit, you’ll get biscuits and other popular breakfast items made fresh daily with high-quality ingredients. Popular menu items include Pigs in a biscuit, buttered biscuit cinnamon rolls, and sweet biscuit beignets sprinkled in powdered sugar and honey marmalade.


California

Enjoy beignets and mouth-watering breakfast sandwiches at Devil’s Teeth Baking Company. Customers can’t stop raving about the lemon-garlic aioli, avocado, applewood smoked bacon, and scrambled eggs sandwiched between their famous buttermilk biscuits.

Don’t miss out on the buttery biscuits at Four Friends Kitchen. This family-friendly breakfast spot isn’t far from city attractions like the African art collection at the Denver Art Museum. 

Connecticut

Bella’s Cafe is a stylish, cozy cafe in New Haven that serves breakfast, brunch, and lunch all day long. Their buttermilk biscuits go well with just about any breakfast dish on their menu but are best when paired with jumbo shrimp and creamy butter grits.

Delaware

The best biscuits in Delaware can be found at this charming brunch spot in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Open daily from 7 AM- 2 PM, Egg is decorated with white and black decor, red roosters, and serves tasty biscuits drowned in sausage gravy. 

Florida

Artisan flour, real butter, and other fresh ingredients are used to make Maple Street Biscuit Co.’s famous flaky all-natural chicken biscuit dishes. Luckily for you, they have several locations in Florida to choose from.

Georgia 

The Flying Biscuit Cafe makes almost 5,000 biscuits a week for dozens of locations across Georgia and surrounding areas. People have been writing home about their biscuits since they opened their first location in the Candler Park neighborhood, where they sold out of biscuits four hours after opening their doors for the first time.

Hawaii

Get em’ while they’re hot and before they’re sold out. The Lilikoi Honey Butter biscuits are so good at Morning Glass Coffee & Cafe and they’re only available on weekends and sometimes on Mondays.

Idaho

Enjoy the B&G house special at Joe Momma’s Eatery. Two fresh hot biscuits smothered in their housemade sausage gravy and from what I hear the flavor is to die for. 

Illinois

Stop by Bang Bang Pie and Biscuits in Chicago, where guests are eager to savor traditional mid-western cooking and eight different biscuit meals. Enjoy ginger sage sausage, and fried bologna biscuits topped with bacon, pesto, squash, zucchini, and other flavorful toppings.

Indiana

Good Morning Mama’s Cafe serves fried Italian biscuits rolled in sugar and cinnamon. Guests rave about their top-notch service and friendly atmosphere. 

Iowa

PerKup Cafe is proclaimed as “the best biscuits and gravy in town.” You can get flaky homemade biscuits doused in an enormous amount of sausage gravy, two eggs, and hash browns for $10. 

Kansas

The Big Biscuit prides itself on its big smiles, welcoming atmosphere, and even bigger biscuits. Make sure you get yours topped with eggs, spinach, and smothered in sausage gravy.

Kentucky

Boujie Biscuit serves sweet and savory comfort food on handcrafted buttermilk biscuits. The peach biscuit is a must-have. One reviewer said their biscuits tasted like heaven in his mouth, due to their moist and tasty flavor.

Biscuits & Buns on Banks has become a New Orleans staple and is known for its award-winning biscuits.  USA Today’s named them one of their top 10 best biscuits in the country.

Maine

Guests can taste the locally grown wheat in the biscuits at Biscuits & Company. The owner’s got the recipe for their biscuits from their Canadian grandmother.

Maryland

Sweet Cheeks Q is at the top of the list for BBQ and homemade biscuits in Boston. They’re known for their trays of BBQ brisket, collard greens, mac and cheese, and other southern dishes.

Kuzzos Chicken And Waffles is a family-oriented, black-owned restaurant that features meals named after family members. The “Cuddin Pete” menu item is sounding pretty good for breakfast. It features biscuits with hot links, sausage or turkey bacon.

Minnesota

Aiming to help at-risk youth, the Butter Bakery Cafe added their creative talents to various notable recipes, like the biscuit sandwich.  Everything, down to the butter, is made from scratch.

Mississippi

Big Bad Breakfast is all about their famous fluffy, black pepper and buttermilk biscuits. The restaurant has six locations — 3 in Alabama, and locations in Florida, South Carolina, Mississippi, and Nashville on the way.

This food truck uses homegrown family cooking style techniques from five generations of their “family bible of flavor.” The open-face Boss Hog biscuit consists of collard greens, pulled pork, and fried onions. Call Ozark Mountain Biscuits to find out their location, they may even come to you.

Add some sass to your biscuit, sis. You’ll find biscuits all throughout the entire menu at The Sassy Biscuit. Biscuit pancakes, waffle pressed biscuits, and biscuit French toast with strawberries and Chantilly cream are just a few faves.

Nebraska

Featured on Food Network and Diners, Drive-In, Dives, Big Mama’s has the taste and flavor-filled biscuits that remind you of Sunday dinner. The original owner Patricia ‘Big Mama’ Barron passed away two years ago, but her family continues to carry on her soul food recipes. Drop by next time, you’re in Ohama. 

Nevada

Enjoy crispy chicken biscuits and smoked brisket biscuits with pickled onions & cucumber, and house-made bbq sauce — and that’s just the appetizer menu at Yardbird in Las Vegas. They can pretty much fry just about anything.

New Hampshire

Located in Manchester’s downtown district, Firefly is an elegant dine-in restaurant focused on providing comfort food, an impressive beverage selection, and signature dishes that attract locals regularly. Their brunch menu features breakfast favorite, Biscuits and Gravy comes dressed in sausage gravy with two eggs, and potatoes. 

New Jersey

The Buttered Biscuit Cafe serves large portion meals and mouthwatering biscuits.  Guests also come for their French-inspired atmosphere and a menu filled with satisfying breakfast and lunch items.

New Mexico

Focused on providing quality service and food, the colorful Flying Star Cafe in Albuquerque recently added new dishes to their ever-changing menu, like the Two Birds and a Biscuit.  

New York

The crispy chicken cutlet served on a buttermilk biscuit smothered in hot sauce and honey butter is why Pies n’ Thighs was voted best biscuits in New York by the New York Daily News. The New York Times called their food, “a compelling combination, well-executed and put forthwith real heart.”

North Carolina

Biscuit Head specializes in delicious Southern-style biscuit creations. Enjoy pulled pork and brisket biscuits served Philly-style with grilled peppers, mushrooms, and onions, topped with a poached egg and cheddar cheese gravy. 

North Dakota

People Magazine highlighted Shack on Broadway for breakfast last year. Everyone loves their large biscuits doused in sausage gravy and other warm delicious treats.

Ohio

Satisfy your breakfast and brunch needs with biscuit sandwiches at the Beachland Ballroom & Tavern. Their famous biscuits come with grits, home fries or salad.

Oklahoma

Rhode Island

CRU Cafe offers a weekly changing menu featuring a few key standards like the Charleston Chicken and Biscuit—fried chicken, sausage gravy, fried egg on their classic homemade biscuits.

South Carolina

Grab a biscuit from award-winning Callie’s Hot Little Biscuit in Charleston. Oprah Magazine described the taste as “a rich, buttery hostess gift.”

South Dakota

Queen City Bakery serves old fashioned buttermilk biscuits filled with round slices of butter and preserves in Sioux Falls. They also have peanut butter sandwich cookies for those looking for a sweet treat.

Tennessee

After getting so many requests, Loveless Cafe in Nashville now shares their recipe with the world with their own biscuit mix available for purchase in local stores.  

Texas

Customers drive three hours from (Dallas to Austin) to get a groovy taste of  Biscuits + Groovy‘s delicious biscuits. Each one is named after disco artists—Aretha Franklin, MC Hammer, Bee Gee, and Donna Summer. 

Utah

Originally a stand at the local Farmers Marker, Sweet Lake Biscuits serves hot fresh homemade biscuits and cold limeade in Salt Lake City. You can add just about any topping, even avocado. 

Vermont

Who knew maple syrup biscuits would be considered a classic dessert in Vermont? Enjoy flaky, hand-mixed biscuits dressed in pure Vermont maple syrup at August First in Burlington. 

Virginia

Norfolk’s Handsome Biscuit takes pride in using local ingredients to make their sweet potato biscuit dessert called the Dolly Madison. 

Washington 

Biscuit Bitch is the Southern brunch spot in Seattle with “an emphasis on homemade biscuits and kick-ass express.” The food-chain opened its fourth location earlier this year in White Center, a go-to neighborhood for dining. 

West Virginia

Tudor’s Biscuit World went from having one location in Charleston to now having over 80 locations across West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky, and Florida. Fresh biscuits are made every 20 minutes. 

Wisconsin

Palomino Bar hosts hands-on biscuit making classes, teaching guests how to make flaky, butter biscuits from scratch with local pie experts in Milwaukee. Their Biscuits and Gravy is a crowd-pleaser. 

Wyoming

From 7 am-3 pm, the Picnic serves breakfast burritos, house-made focaccia and cheddar scallion biscuits with whipped cheese, egg soufflé and Italian dry-cured ham, like the Biscuit Board.
