Travel Across Europe For $5, Here’s How
By Parker Diakite
Traveling around Europe is already easy enough thanks to Eurail and budget-friendly air companies, but an even cheaper option for travelers is about to launch soon.
BlaBlaBus, a spinoff of the French carpooling app BlaBlaCar, has just acquired Ouibus, which means the company is expanding its routes outside of France.
The acquisition allows BlaBlaBus to offer passengers to book bus seats to more than 300 destinations in over 10 countries across Europe.
According to the company’s website, BlaBlaBus includes a discounted bus ticket to your destination along with other possible amenities such as WiFi, onboard restrooms, A/C, and power outlets.
The company said they plan to add 70 more routes before the year is over, growing their network to include over 400 cities, a statement reads online.
“In 2018, 50 million passengers traveled with BlaBlaCar,” Nicolas Brusson, co-founder and CEO of BlaBlaCar, stated. “Offering carpooling and buses on the same platform makes the service more attractive as it will make it easier for passengers to find the right solution for the diversity of their needs, whatever their destination in Europe.”
Company officials said the bus will promote “sustainable mobility” across Europe.
“Contrary to popular belief, with a 60% average occupancy rate, a bus emits close to a third of the emissions per passenger kilometer of a car,” said Frederic Mazzella, founder, and president of BlaBlaCar. “In buses, just as in cars, our goal is to fill empty seats by running a fully optimized road travel network.”
Right now, the coral-colored buses can be found in Italy, Switzerland, France, Portugal, Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Morocco.
Fares at 4.99 Euros ($5.55 USD), but currently the company is running a 20 percent summer promotion that drops the base price to 3.99 Euros ($4.50). If you decide to travel on BlaBlaBus, passengers are allotted two large suitcases and a small carry-on.
