This Island In The Bahamas Should Be Your Next Travel Destination

By Kelsey Marie

Imagine vacationing on an under-the-radar island, free of tourists and overpriced drinks.

What if I told you this island actually exists and is easy to access?

Cat Island is an Out Island (or known as Family Island by Bahamian locals) located on the eastern boundary of the Bahamas. You can get there by taking a 40-minute flight with Sky Bahamas from Lynden Pindling International Airport in Nassau to New Bight, Cat Island. Flights to Cat Island run twice-a-day from Nassau.

This island is only 48 miles long and has a population of around 1,700 people. There are no large resorts or cruise ship ports on Cat Island, making it the ideal destination for those who are looking to disconnect.

Instead of staying in a large resort, you can choose from family-run resorts or Airbnb villas. The prices are reasonable, ranging from $250 – $580 per night.

Eating healthy comes easy on Cat Island because there is an abundance of locally grown fruits, vegetables and fresh seafood. Since this is a remote island, certain foods like milk has to be imported from the populated areas in the Bahamas.

If you enjoy meaningful interactions with locals, be a part of the People-To-People cultural experience by contacting the tourism ministry online before traveling. This program pairs you up with a local volunteer for activities interesting to you such as cooking, music, fishing and more.

From pink-and-white sand beaches to diving in waters facing the Atlantic Ocean; Cat Island is a place of relaxation and adventure.

If you enjoy hiking, Mount Alvernia is 206 feet above sea level — the highest point in the islands of the Bahamas. Spend a morning on a 10-minute hike up this mountain to get a full 360-degree panoramic view of Cat Island. Just beware that the hike is steep and rocky.

Also on the top of Mount Alvernia is a monastery, called The Hermitage. Built in 1939, it is no longer in use and is now open to the public for exploration.

Although the island is small, things are pretty spread out, so renting a car is recommended.
