Make room Spirit and Frontier.

A start-up low-budget airline is preparing to launch this fall, and its CEO is a former airline executive. Andrew Levy is the former chief financial officer of United Airlines and the head of a new carrier expected to launch in the United States, XTRA Airways.

“There’s a lot of room for more airplane seats in the United States,” Levy told WBUR’s Here & Now.

If you live near an airport not often served by major carriers, you might be in luck. It’s unclear which locations XTRA will fly to but Levy said airline won’t be targeting large hubs. Instead, it will cater to smaller airports.

“Doing the same thing as everyone else, but trying to do it better, hasn’t worked, historically, very well in the airline industry,” Levy told Here & Now. “So that’s certainly not what we’re trying to do, is out-Spirit Spirit or out-Allegiant Allegiant or anybody else like that. We aim to do something that’s different.”

Levy said he hopes the airline will have five planes in the sky by the end of 2019, and 45 by 2023, according to the WBUR report.

Another airline, which won’t be called Moxy, is reportedly being launched by the founder of JetBlue. It has already ordered 60 Airbus A220 jets which will arrive in 2020. It will also target smaller airports.
“I think it’s going to be low cost, but when you say “ultra-low cost,” that means you have to treat everyone like garbage,” not-Moxy’s founder, David Neeleman told CN Traveler in 2018. “I prefer to say we are a high-tech company that just happens to fly airplanes.”
