All LAX Terminals Operational After Power Outage and Evacuation

Los Angeles International Airport has confirmed that all operations have returned to normal after a power outage that led to grounded flights and a morning evacuation. An airport spokesperson told MSN News that the outage was due to a power surge at an off-airport LA Department of Water and Power station.

The electrical failure occurred yesterday evening at 6:10 pm, causing delays and grounded flights at Terminals 1, 7, and 8. Flight crews and passengers were stuck on the tarmac for hours, unable to communicate with staff inside the airport to request stairs for deplaning. Outside the airport, multiple traffic lights were off, including the iconic LAX letters that greet arriving passengers.

Early this morning, Terminal 1 was evacuated so that TSA could re-screen passengers and luggage for safety. This resulted in longer than usual TSA lines as new Terminal 1 passengers arrived to catch morning flights. Southwest Air told CBS that they had to cancel 11 flights and delay 15 others due to Thursday morning’s Terminal 1 rescreening. An airport official said that a total of 21 flights were canceled and at least seven others were diverted.
